Losing out on Holiday means that an improved pass rush must (probably) come from the Draft. So I have a couple of scenarios that I'd like to run by everybody:

A. The 1st five picks go like this. 1. Palmer 2. Rogers 3. Johnson 4. Kennedy 5. Newman. Would we better off with?

Option A-Take Suggs #1 and someone like Peterson, Long or Warren (DT's) at #2.

Option B-Take Robertson at #1 and a DE in the 2nd round. Someone like Peek, Pace or White?

B. Neither Suggs or Robertson (or Newman) are available, should we?

Option A-Take BPA or

Option B-Trade down, possibly with the Jets, who have targeted Johnson, and select a DT and DE(an every down DE) in the 1st round and perhaps a pass rush specialist like Peek in the 2nd round?

As tempting as it might be to plug the remaining gap at DT for once and for all, if Suggs is still there, leap on that puppy before someone changes their mind.

If he isn't - and either Newman, Trufant or Robertson is there - take your pick.

Or if Suggs is gone and one of the teams with two #1's makes us an offer we can't refuse, trade down to grab McDougle plus either Henderson, Peterson or Haynes if available with the other pick. (Note - I don't think any of the remaining corners are worth a 1st round pick other than Woolfolk who appears to be a bit risky, but there should be a good CB available with our #37 pick.

Finally, it's not as if we were impoverished at LDE. There's no reason why VDB and Wakefield can't stack up over there with either Suggs or McDougle backed up by Dennis Johnson off the right edge.

In other words, we really don't need a Peterson type -I think Holliday was more of a "target of opportunity" than he was a "must have."

Jeff, when it comes to pass rushing we ARE impovrished at DE. The team had 40 sacks over the past TWO years. KVB and Wakefield are okay against the run but don't get the job done in passing situations. I'm hopeful that Dennis Johnson will improve but I don't believe the team wants to count on that. Suggs is the target but it's verry iffy that he's there at #6.

Great comment. I think that pretty well sums up the Holliday situation. And I also agree that I think the pass rush next year will be improved even if nothing more happens. It still may not be the best in the NFL by any means, but there were signs of it improving at the end of last year.

Certainly I hope to see more developments, but as I have maintained all along, I still say the top priority in the draft should be a DT.
