Talked my scout friend and asked him about a few guys the Cards may be interested in drafting in round 1. Nothing earth shattering but he's a quick paraphrase of some players.

Eli Apple- probably won't be there, best of the group
William Jackson- most upside
Ryan Kelly- safest
Noah Spence- nut job
Vince Fuller- ACL

With Keim's draft history of playing it safe in round 1, I think Kelly is the pick if he's there.

Kelly being the "safest" pick means he has the highest floor......the problem is,...he is likely also already at his ceiling.

I really don't understand the Eli Apple love. Dude is kind of similar to Jalen Collins of last year. Has all the athletic ability in the world, but his technique is bad & he is a bit grabby. Are you high on him because he's a Ohio State player?

William Jackson & MacKensie Alexander would be way better picks.

While I don't think he played it safe in round 1 last year, taking a raw, long-term project, I agree that Kelly is likely the pick if he's there. And I'm good with that.

I just don't see it.

There is too much talent in the defensive trenches available in that round...whereas,.. a starting Center can be drafted in the third, or even fourth round in this draft.....Martin, Glasgow, or Tuerk will be available at our next pick....it makes zero sense to pass up on the star power that will be on the board at 29 just to pick a center who will likely never see a pro bowl....and most likely will never get much better than he is right now.

Thanks Cbus, I love your friends draft tidbits. Was he saying Apple was best CB in the draft or best of CB's outside of Hargreaves and Ramsey? I like Apple and Jackson a little better than Alexander right now. Jackson has elite ball skills and is very physical, but misses tackles and a little stiff. Apple is long, fast and very fluid, but not quite as physical and a little raw. Both have #1 corner potential.

Also, unless I missed it could you ask him about a few Dlineman if you get a chance? I would love to hear his opinion on Butler, Bullard and Hargrave.

It depends on how Keim rates those centers. We're pretty much banking on taking a starting center this year, IMO. Not a project--a 1st-year starter. If he sees Kelly as the only one, or only one or two of those as an acceptable pick, he probably won't wait until the third round--and definitely not until the 4th, IMO.

No, the OSU factor has nothing to do with it. He has the size/speed/fluid hips you look for in a CB. Plus, he's still very young. I think Alexander is very overrated. Jackson could turn out better though.

Apple is not rated as highly as Ramsey or Hargreaves. He was merely the best of the guys I asked him about.

I will ask about DL.

You just reiterated what I said about Apple, lol.

Totally agree!

And Let's not forget those "highly touted" Bama Oline players for years now have been flops in Rd 1

Thx Jim for your info brotha

Saban and his crew get every ounce of talent those guys have to give...which is why I mentioned he may never get any better than he is right now.

While i have no qualms about giving up the 2nd rounder for Chandler Jones --

it does create a bit of a tight spot-

if you dont take Kelley in in the top 40 picks or so -- i think there is very little chance Nick Martin is still there at the bottom or round 3. after that, the talent drops ( or, with Matt Tuerk, coming off an ACL)

yes -- there have been good centers drafted in the later rounds, but that is different from "centers drafted in the later rounds will be good"

I personally think you take your highest rated player and hopefully fill the gaps with vets, because from what we have seen with Arians he doesn't trust rookies and hates playing them until he trusts them somewhat. Im all for drafting a C this year I guess I just don't expect it to matter much year 1. Just hope BASK get it right with another Oline draft pick they are due to actually hit on one.

I was just talking to my son yesterday, and in his latest mock he was us taking Apple. I told him he'll be long gone and I said don't be surprised if Kelly is the pick. he's athletic, tough, and very smart.

By the way I've been gone for about 6 weeks, just got a new hip and just starting to feel good again. So I've missed out on a lot of draft talk, which I missed more then anything.

A new hip? I'm glad it seems to be working out for you, my friend.

Texted about the DL.

The guys I asked about were Jarron Reed, Nkemdiche, Bullard, Butler and Hargrave.

He likes Reed the best followed by Nkemdiche, Butler, Bullard, and Hargrave.

Reed: clearly the best of this group
Nkemdiche: kind of what has been said throughout the process. High level talent but comes with questions.
Butler: good player
Bullard: not a big fan
Hargrave: didn't comment on him.

Thanks Cbus. I think Reed will be a very good player in the league, but I don't think he is what we are looking for. I'm a little disappointed he doesn't like Bullard. Jacksonville obviously has close ties with all the Florida players. Decent chance Butler and/or Nkemdiche will be there at #29. That would be a tough call, but sky is the limit for both.

Reed is Dan Williams 2.0. I still like him though. He is a tough run defender

and plays hard. I would rather have Butler or Robert because they offer

the ability to collapse the pocket. I say build up our front 7 and it wont matter

who our number 2 corner is. Look at the Panthers they value the men up front

more than they do the secondary. Campbell is getting old and we have a

gaping hole in the middle of the defensive line. That has to be fixed because

we have Gurley and Hyde in our division. Seattle is going to run the rock too.
