But does he become the player he has become on the Celtics if he stays with the Suns?

Good question.

Hearing Doc Rivers talk yesterday about how temperamental Rondo is makes this question even more relevant.

Since the draft is right around the corner I think we need a poll to see what ASFNers think is the biggest trade/draft ***** of the Sarver era. Maybe after we get a nice LONG list we can create a poll.

Off the top of my head, Rondo, Kurt Thomas and 2 firsts..., Dang/Iggy to Chicago for a #1 the next year that turned into crap......

It isn't even close IMO. I think giving up 2 first round picks in order to move a player that still had reasonable value is one of the worst moves in the history of the league. The Googs trade is also a pretty bad move but I wouldn't even put Rondo in the top 5.

can someone just make a list of all our terrible moves within the past 15yrs, and make it a sticky? lol

seems like every now and then, a new thread pops up with the same blunders we keep kicking ourselves for.

Another good question is whether we would have even drafted him had we kept the pick.

Well, in coach D's system he probably wouldn't have played very much, probably would have been frustrated, and it's unclear whether his style would be a good change of pace for Nash. Makes me almost glad he did go to the Celtics, because we're getting to watch a really interesting player.

We already know that the answer to that question is No. The Suns sold the pick because there was no one they wanted, not because they were "trading" Rondo specifically.

was it really just 350k for Rondo? Or did we get a future first as well?

The Suns obtained a Cleveland first round pick plus cash considerations in the trade which sent Brian Grant and Rondo to the Celtics in 2006.

Phoenix in return conveyed to Portland the Cleveland pick, the 24th pick in the 2007 draft (Rudy Fernandez), plus James Jones for cash considerations. The Suns then used their pick to select Tucker at #29 in the same draft.

Ah, the smell of money.

It's a mess to figure out but this is my best shot.

agreed. The then traded Thomas again and GOT a first round pick for him. We gave up two 1st rounders when another team gained one. Insane how bad that trade was.

It was $3 million, not $350,000.

I'm doubting the Suns got 3M in the Rondo trade because they got a first round pick in return. The figure $350,000 sounds closer to correct. However, I'm not sure anymore.

The Sonics made out like bandits like you saying by getting another first round in another trade which included Kurt Thomas I believe the next season. Three first round picks for KT garnered by Seattle.

There really was no point of keeping that pick, Antoni publicy stated he does not develop rookies (especially ones who cannot do the only thing he values - shooting 3's). Rondo would have sat on the bench with our seven man rotation and perhaps ended up out of the league when he got zero burn.

that's right. I remember the point guard I wanted them to take was Marcus Williams from Connecticut. I didn't want Rondo because he couldn't shoot. It will be really interesting to see what happens to Rondo if/when he isn't playing with three future Hall of Famers. But really, with his poor shooting he would not have sniffed the court under Mike D.

The Tom Gugliotta trade saved the Phoenix Suns some ridiculous amount of money in the luxury tax. I remember I worked it all out, and if I remember correctly it was something like $13 million. But Tom Gugliotta was done. Kurt Thomas was still a damn good basketball player. All the draft picks we gave up was bad enough, but think about these two things. Without Kurt Thomas there is no way that San Antonio Spurs would have beaten us that year in the playoffs. Also, I would have to go back and look at exactly what we had on the roster, but I remember thinking we could have put together a much better package than Memphis got for Gasol.

It's really not even close. That Kurt Thomas trade was terrible. And by the way the trade that cost us Deng/Iguodala was Bryan Colangelo. They scared themselves into thinking that both of those guys would be taken, so they made the trade to maximize the amount of money they could spend in free agency. That and the Atlanta pick we lost because it went to #3 were just heartbreakers.

Huh? That wasn't the question. Who would we have drafted had we held on to the pick? I'm saying probably not Rondo since he couldn't shoot.

Word is that it was Shannon Brown. I believe it was Coro that revealed that when they signed him last offseason.

Interesting. Thanks.

I see that Kyle Lowry, Brown, and Jordan Farmar went 24, 25, 26 in that draft (2006).

I would have taken Brown over him too. Out of college, I had huge expectations for Shannon and Rondo had been more of a disappointment than anything else. He had some big games and the talent was clearly there but he was pretty much the opposite of a team leader and was a very poor shooter even for the college game. I know he rubbed most of his teammates the wrong way and the rumors were that his Coach wasn't all that sad to see him go despite the fact that most nights he was their best player. I wish we had drafted him just like I wish I could win a Bugatti Veyron as a door prize - not because I want to own one but because I'd love to cash in on the sale.
