"Having trouble fielding his position."

Crap. Blowing smoke. He's not ready. Just tell us the truth.

When has Randy ever "fielded his position"?

same thing skkorpion. In order to pitch he has to be able to move around on the mound and run to field a ball. If he is too tentative on his knee, that's a problem. It means he's not ready right now. Don't want him to get hurt favoring the knee.

schillingfan, I guess I need to be more blunt. I don't believe the nonsense from the front office that Randy is progressing nicely.

How many times did they mislead us about Stottlemyre when we all knew that torn rotator cuffs never heal without surgery?

I enjoy your posts and baseball acumen but methinks you misread the signals in this case.

Torn rotator cuffs can hold up for a while without surgery, but ultimately it seems they usually need it. That wasn't all smoke blowing, but it was a stupid decision by Todd Stottlemyre if he really wanted to pitch. But I never had any use for him. I don't think the situations are comparable.

My point with Randy is to say that he can't field the position is to say he's not ready. So there's no lie there. Part of pitching is fielding the position and if you can't do that, then you are too hurt and not ready. There's no smoke blowing, there.

After 20 years of being a Phillies phan I'm well familiar with smoke blowing from the front office. that's all they do. This didn't sound like it. With injuries you don't know until you try. Sometimes it's quicker, sometimes it's not

How many times did we get "mixed signals" earlier this year about the extent of RJ's injury before they finally put him on the shelf.

Damn the Colangelos! Damn them - why the hell can't they be more like the Bidwills and their organization that gives me access to the organization. Sour grapes is what this sounds like and this non-stop criticism of the Colangelos, yet support for the Cards just makes me scratch my head.

Skkorp - I love this site - I love the work you put into it, but man it seems like you have a personal vendetta against everything donning purple, orange and teal (the teal part I can understand - i hate that color)

I am concerned that Johnson is not going to be right

Call me a naysayer but I've had a bad feeling about Johnson's injury that it is one of these nagging injuries that will take a whole off season to get over. I don't like the reports that he experiences swelling the day after he throws. Also don't like the comments from Paul Lessard that it's " on the Big Fellow now". The implication being he ( The Unit) will have to decide how much discomfort he is willing to bear and pitch with. If true this does not bode well.

Well I'm certainly not an expert in the medical field but I can tell you what I've read from people who supposedly are (in the sports medicine field):

The Synvisc injections into Johnson's knee are not the final solution but more of a stop-gap to get him through until the offseason. The artificial cartiledge can last anywhere from 8 weeks to several months under normal stress.

RJ will mostlikely get microfracture surgery or an osteotomy in the offseason which would put him rehabing for another 4 mos or so. This is all assuming things go as planned.

Both Mo Vaughn and Marvin Benard have had similar injuries. Vaughn is done for his career now and Benard has been down since May with at least 3-6 weeks more.

Remember, Randy is a freak of nature.

FRESNO, Calif - Five-time Cy Young Award winner Randy Johnson sauntered to the mound at Grizzlies Stadium on Saturday for his first start since April 27, seemingly effortlessly retired the 12 batters he faced in order.

Then he shook hands with his temporary teammates and professed himself pleasantly surprised with the entire experience.

"It was a big step," the D'backs ace said after his rehabilitation start for the Sidewinders. "I was very encouraged by the way I pitched."

Johnson, who originally was scheduled to pitch in Tucson on Thursday, underwent arthroscopic surgery on his right knee two months ago. He had no problems in his four-inning outing: with his command, his health or his effectiveness. He threw 44 pitches and struck out four.

The Grizzlies beat the Sidewinders 5-4 in 11 innings.

It took him just three pitches to retire the side in the third inning on two flyouts and a groundout.

"It brings a big-league atmosphere to a minor-league game," Sidewinders pitching coach Mike Parrott said before the game. "I'm looking forward to being a fan for three innings."

The main health concerns for Johnson going into Saturday were how his knee would hold up in a game situation and whether he would feel any pain afterward.

The true test, Johnson said, will come in the next few days.

"There's always the chance of it swelling," he said.

The tentative plan is for Johnson to make two more starts with Tucson and join the Diamondbacks after the All-Star break, July 14-16.

In his only at-bat, Johnson hit an infield chopper and halfheartedly jogged toward first base as the Grizzlies turned a double play.

"I don't wanna take any chances and hurt myself with the knee," he said. "Hopefully. the fans will understand that. The people who came to see me came to see me pitch, not because they wanted to watch my at-bat."

All told, Johnson spent about six hours in Fresno. But he insisted he enjoyed the experience; indeed, he stayed in the dugout to watch a few innings after he reached his pitch count.

"It was a lot of fun coming to Triple-A," he said. "The facilities here are incredible."

But as his rehabilitation continues, Johnson said the intensity will pick up.

"Once I get closer to a major-league start, it will be more intense than it was here," he said.

The Sidewinders play on the road until opening a four-game series with Edmonton at Tucson Electric Park on July 17.
