Teams put around 75% of the rosters on waivers after the trading deadline. Its not like in the NFL where the team loses all rights to the player.

If he clears waivers, the D-backs can trade him even though the official deadline has passed. This is one of those goofy MLB things.

Why wouldn't the Yankees pick him up?

It is tradition and a sin to get someone off waivers with out talking with the team first.

actually once a team claims him, the diamondbacks can pull him off waivers or work out a trade with the team

Yeah, one of those "unwritten rules of baseball". Why not just keep it simple and extend the actual trading deadline another 2-3 weeks? Oh yeah, when it comes to owners in baseball making decisions like this, nothing is ever simple. Except the owners themselves, of course. :D

THE BOSS CALLS BRASS TO TAMPA

By GEORGE KING

August 24, 2004 -- CLEVELAND — George Steinbrenner has summoned his Inner Circle to Tampa for meetings in the wake of the Yankees losing three straight, six of seven and having their AL East lead shaved to 51/2 games over the Red Sox going into last night's action. GM Brian Cashman left The Bronx yesterday on a plane for Tampa where VPs Mark Newman, Damon Oppenheimer and Billy Connors were already ensconced and preparing for a series of meetings with The Boss, who is concerned about the starting rotation and recent bullpen problems.

"I don't know," a club source said when asked how long The Boss would keep his Inner Circle in Tampa looking for answers.

VPs Gene Michael and Gordon Blakeley aren't part of the pow-wow since they are in Columbus watching the Clippers (Triple-A). It's believed the Diamondbacks put Randy Johnson on waivers yesterday and he's eligible to clear by 1 p.m. tomorrow, but that's an unlikely scenario and he certainly wouldn't get to the Yankees on a waiver claim.

Itis not an unwritten rule of basbeall at all. Once a team claims Randy Johnson the Diamondbacks can: A. Pull him off waivers B. Work out a trade with the team C. Let the team have him

What could the Yankees give the Dbacks for Randy at this point?

Any MLB players the Dbacks get would have to clear waivers too and the Yankees farm is a joke. Working a 3 way deal would be next to impossible because the Yankees have nothing to offer.

The only thing the Yankees could give the Dbacks is MONEY.

I guess the Yankees could send a couple of weak prospects and a boat load of cash but isn't that against the rules? Didn't the Yankees try to do that before?

Don't worry, the Yankees will not get Johnson, at least not until this winter. The Red Sox are not dumb enough to let Randy pass through them to get to the Yanks. I'm guessing the first team to put a claim on Randy would be the Padres (who would do it to prevent a trade to the Dodgers) and they have neither the farm system nor the money to deal for Johnson.

What I meant was, how many times do you actually see a player picked up off of waivers after the trade deadline? Almost never. It may not be an "unwritten rule", but it sure seems to be common policy not to grab a player off waivers after the deadline because teams know that once a player clears, he becomes eligible for trade.

Sheesh, everything gets taken so literally.

Actually, not 'almost never' at all. Elmer Dessens went through waivers and was traded. Likewise Larry Walker. A few guys have been already, and last year several were.

A team can claim a guy going through waivers, and try to make a trade for the player, partly as a way to prevent another team from gaining quick access, because Sept 1, they're of no post-season value to a new team. The risk is if you claim and the originating team says, "GREAT! He's all yours!" you're stuck with the salary. In this case, RJ is probably being dangled to see who might be interested in the off-season.

You can only do the revocable waiver once - if you put a guy through a second time and he's claimed, you can't pull him off the market.
