If, like me, you were waiting for the bowl games to provide a little more clarity to QB selection I suspect you were disappointed. I was stunned as to how badly they played. Rudolph looked decent, but Ole Miss ranked 52nd in pass defense. That’s not a horrible number but it’s not the mark of a tough defense either. Allen had a good half, but looked mediocre in the second half. After that nobody looked like a QB you’d want to bet your future on if you were a GM. I could wait for All-Star games, the Combine and the Pro Days, but I don’t see them impacting my positioning.

Every scout has their own criteria. However they have a saying they constantly use. I posted it already on a thread. “Trust the talent.” It means focus more on their tools than their results. Consider the fate of Mayfield. The play calling in his game was among the worst I’ve seen. I don’t say they to excuse his performance. It should have been better. It’s just to point out factors like teammate performance, play calling, injury status and many other factors impact the numbers, but don’t always tell the story about the abilities.

For my money I give a great deal of weight to love of the game. It’s one reason I’m doubtful about Nkemdiche. Anyway as I rank these QBs I’m going to share what I’m hearing and what I’m thinking. Plus I’m anxious to hear the board’s thinking. So here goes.

Sam Darnold will go first, I have him third.

Sam Darnold is the top QB among the group with whom I talk. He has the prototypical size scouts pray to find. He has above average arm strength and his self-confidence is unshakeable. Of course for me that’s the problem. He takes unnecessary risks that cost winnable games. I expect Cleveland to grab him.

Josh Rosen will go second, I have him second.

He offers solid arm strength, good game management and seems to be a willing student of the game. He has a low bust potential. I wish he were more dynamic but it’s hard not to feel good about him as a selection. I think with Eli as a mentor, he’d be an awesome choice for the Giants. I hear their scouts like him. Some Cleveland scouts like him too and he’s a safer pick than Darnold for a team that has made too many mistakes. Still I think Cleveland goes Darnold.

Josh Allen is the majority pick for third. I have him sixth.

Allen’s a raw talent that’s had to work with erratic personnel and mediocre coaching. There’s no question he has tools. However he’s very raw and has virtually no advanced skills. He has a big arm and good running legs. If he can be coached up he could be huge. He could also be the next Jay Cutler. I surely missed on him. I should have paid more attention to his lack of love for the game. I hear Denver likes Allen but prefers a free agent.

Baker Mayfield was rising before the Georgia game. Now he’s a consensus fourth. I have him first.

No one disputes his talent. He passes aggressively, but is rarely intercepted. He personifies a mobile QB. He leads and motivates better than any other prospects. He has trouble with self-control. If he matures out of this behavior he can be great. He’s also not the ideal height. People keep saying few QBs of his height have succeeded. I maintain few if any of them had his talent level. If the Cards want Mayfield they may have to consider going after Cleveland's second pick. Despite the very deep QB pool I expect the top 4 QBs to be gone by pick 6 at the latest.

Mason Rudolph would likely go next. I have him here also.

I’m seeing a few people make more of his Bowl performance than I believe it merits. One guy actually had him on top. Most people see him as a Trubisky clone with a steady, solid career being the feeling of most. Again he’s not a big motivator of men, but he’s viewed as solid by his teammates. I think he definitely goes round 1.

Lamar Jackson is the next man up. Again I’m in agreement.

A dual threat QB, he’s improved dramatically this year. Some project similar growth in his next year. If that were to happen, he be a fine player others are not as certain of his ability to continue to progress. He has a big arm, is the top runner among this group and is likely the best athlete. I like him but I think he’s more than a year from being NFL ready to start.

Beyond this group consensus breaks down. Others considered for day two include Luke Faulk, Mike White, Drew Lock, Riley Ferguson and Ryan Finley.

It’s not unusual for some scout to convince some GM that they have a sleeper. So you’ll hear several others QBs selected but almost certainly on day 3.

so I take it you think Indy will trade out rather than drafting Barkley at 3? Rather Luck or Brisset a RB as dynamic as Barkley could go a long way towards a QB's success.

I would be okay if AZ could manage to get Mayfield... by his demeanor the last few interviews I have seen my guess is some people he respects have had some tough conversations with him in regards to image. I think the kid will mature well over the next couple of years. Having the sense to listen to those who have gone before is a good trait for any youngster. You cant teach the fire that kid has...if you could Eli would have been Legendary

I feel like gambling on a really immature QB having the discipline to be a successful pro has failed pretty much every time.

Great read, Harry.

I agree in the order of QBs taken. I don't get to watch any film, but just the eye test on the right weekends. I think your top three are accurate, but at the end of the day the Cardinals only have a chance at the players not named Darnold or Rosen. We'll see as the process develops, but I'd still like to take a shot at one of these 6 in the draft.

Spot on assessment imo Harry & agree with everything you say & how you rank them.

I do think that Mahomes & Watson will have better careers than any of these kids in this draft. Once again Cards imo lost out on a chance of greatness but they sit back & weren’t aggressive in that draft!

This is such a good point.

Can anyone point to a kid with maturity problems drafted in the first round that ever became one of the great ones?

I’m trying to think... I guess you can put Cam in there as definitely successful, but he also had size, arm and speed that are literally game changers. Anyone else?

He was a second round pick though.

I don't think the question was great NFL QBs with character issues, but first rounders with them.

Yeah, Cam is such an athletic monster that his success was hard to stop. He probably should be much better though with his gifts. And I don't think he is dumb either, he reads the game well, he just hasn't really grown as a player.

Having the luxury of sticking an immature guy on your bench a while would help, I doubt we'll have that luxury. And I don't see the same immaturity either. Favre was wild but never a douche.

Harry you might want to go over your stats. Rudolph played against Virginia Tech, not Mississippi. Secondly they were the 5th ranked defense in the country. I'm not sure about pass defense but I'm sure he had over 300 yards he always does.

I think we have a legit shot to deal around and get Baker Mayfield.
Darnold has been my guy but mostly because I think he is a safe pick and had we kept BA. he is a BA type QB...

But Baker Mayfield has "IT"... he might be the only QB in this group that does. I think he is capable of elevating his team mates in crunch time and taking it up a notch. It didnt show in the bowl game but the play calling pretty much squashed any chance Mayfield may have had for any heroics...would like to see him get a touch better on deep balls though.

I think we will see a couple qb's slide... teams always need oline and this is a weaker draft overall so the few top tackles may go early.

Maybe, maybe not... but what I've seen in recent history is teams getting burned really bad on that gamble. If we draft mayfield I will chug the kool-aid until he convinces me not to, but if I'm the guy making the choice and the talent level is remotely close, I'd lean towards the guy who doesn't make the neutral observer feel like he is a sack of crap.

Good stuff Harry.

Cards may have trade up to get the guy they want. Darnold and Rosen will go in the top two most likely. I'm not high on Allen, he scares me. Mayfield and Rudolph are both scheduled to be at the Senior Bowl. I hope they both go and don't back out. Its the practices at the Senior Bowl that are important for the pro scouts. Then there is the Combine and hopefully they all will work out. This is a good start and now we can look forward to at least 1000 mocks.

Yeah, I blew that one. It was Va Tech. However the 5th ranking is not their pass defense. They ranked 33rd in that category.

That’s better but clearly not a strong pass defense team. I do apologize for the místake but it doesn’t change my ranking.

Does anybody really think Mayfield's rah-rah stuff is going to play well in a NFL locker room? I sure don't. To me, Mayfield has more red flags than any of the top 5-6. He's short, doesn't have a strong arm, not the greatest athlete, immature, to rah-rah, and plays in an offense that usually has WR's running wide open. On the plus side, he can make plays outside the pocket, throws an accurate ball, and seems to be a winner although Oklahoma has lost 2 games every year and, at a school like Oklahoma with their talent, that's really not all that special.

What do I know but I don't see evidence that Mayfield is a "douche." As best as I can tell his Teammates and Coaches respect and like him. He's immature. He's brash, cocky, and has a lot of "swagger." Back in the day we would have called him a "hot dog" w/ his exaggerated after play, and sideline antics. I could do w/ less of those yes. If somehow the 2013 Carson Palmer could have gotten a transplant of 1/2 of his cocky swagger in the playoffs we may have won the Super Bowl that year!

He makes the whole Team-Offense and Defense better though. I noticed that from the first game he ever played for Oklahoma. Will he be able to bring that w/ him to the NFL? I don't know. Remember he was a walk on at OU. I believe the only Division1 NCAA college that offered him a scholarship was Texas Tech. He goes from there to winning the Heisman trophy. He loves being a Sooner and wanted to be one for nearly all of his life. Maybe that motivation doesn't come with him to the NFL though? That is my main concern w/ him. Not that he's a "douche." I have been wrong before and I could definitely be wrong again about Baker Mayfield too.

Different rankings are making my head swim. What I'm pretty sure about is that the Cards will go QB in the first round. They have to show a new coach candidate, that they have a plan for a QBOTF. You can say a FA, but I don't see one that would make a potential HC excited.

ummm..... Dan Marino

P S Lincoln Riley needs to take a hit for Mayfield's game against Georgia. he got cute and took the ball out of Baker's hands at the wrong time. Rookie coach. I don't think he cost Mayfield's draft status but in these mocks and public opinion he took a hit. Pro teams won't blow it on this one because of that game. He still managed 45 points against Georgia. Not his fault the D couldn't stop Georgia.

Garth, I think that Steve Keim wants either Josh Allen or Mason Rudolph in this draft...he might look to trade up for Allen (and would have to, by most projections), but very might be able to take Rudolph at #15. of course, this depends on whether the new HC and OC concur, and/or whether Keim and the new HC address the QB position in FA or via trade.

The chances of ARZ getting Jackson or Mayfield with the current draft order but desperate teams in the bottom half may pay the price to move up and take them early.

i guess my choice is influenced by who i think the Cards could realistically get-- Rosen and Darnold will be long gone -- so it comes down to the next three

I feel like the Cards have been down the Allen/Jackson road before -- these physical marvels who "just need to fix their mechanics/footwork to improve their accuracy" --- yet that never seems to happen. So that eliminates Allen and Jackson for me --

leaving Mayfield. I like the accuracy and really like the variety of throws he displayed against Georgia: anticipation throws, throws with touch, bullets into a tight window, side arm flicks, etc. I also like he goes through progressions, and, knows how to manipulate coverage with his eyes to get what he wants. Absolutely love the uber-competitiveness and the fact that he was a walk on, and still carries that chip. I suspect that as the third or fourth QB taken, he will carry that chip around as well in the NFL.

I do worry that he has enjoyed a level of O-line protection that no NFL team can replicate -- and his game broke down as Georgia produced pressure.
