I just think they wanted to upgrade athletically. They needed more speed and agility. He was a liability in that way. He was a few notches under guys like PP, Honey Badger, Buchanan, etc. Looking around, the great secondaries have guys more athletic then Rashad.
Rashad can and was picked on at times. We might have removed that hole. We might have added a different one. But overall I think we can get guys to pick up the defensive QB'ing and Rashad wasn't going to become more athletic.
Sadly, it makes sense. To commit to him, would of been to commit to that with some pretty high dollars. Once they made the decision not to commit that to him, and to seek an upgrade, they needed to act on it. They did with Branch, so there wasn't much of a chance for Rashad to come back.
I think all of us would of loved for him to come back cheaply, but ultimately we moved on, and he found something. Branch is a far superior athlete. Will he be the defense's QB or someone else? Who knows.
But it's a tough deal for Rashad Johnson. Keim probably felt it was possible and needed to upgrade the position, and couldn't invest into Rashad what Rashad wanted.
Of course I could be wrong. I hope he does well though. He deserves it. He puts it all out on the field.
We didn't offer him a deal, and it's possible we didn't want to upset him with a low one, or commit to someone they want to upgrade. But as I said, it seemed like a longshot he'd return when we got Branch.
They might really see something in Swearinger too.
