Teams told Cardinals UFA RB Rashard Mendenhall is, in fact, retiring, per sources. Mendenhall hinted at in a Feb. 25 Huffington Post column.

At least we don't have to worry about him coming back.

But seriously, good luck to him. He seems to know it is time to go.

That is somewhat of a shock to me. I may be in the minority but I didn't think he was that bad. Fumbles bothered me but I thought there was half a chance he could be back for next season.

Good for him he seems like a good guy. Must be hard to be in your 20s and have your body fail you.

I thought he played well in spurts, but yeah he looked like a guy on his last legs.

Good luck Mendenhall, and thanks for some tough runs for a year.

Good for Rashard. I hope that he is able to do the things he wants to do without suffering from injury leftovers from football. He did a nice job for us, and deserves a decent future.

When a guy sits in his apartment with nothing but a futon and books, this really isn't surprising..

I think it's admirable that Mendy is letting his heart be his compass. I wish him peace.

Why I retired at 26.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/rashard-mendenhall/rashard-mendenhall-retirement-_b_4931316.html

I decided not to hold a press conference because I didn't want to have to say things that were cliché. I've done enough of that since I've been playing football. I actually didn't really plan on saying anything about my retirement at all. I just kind of wanted to disappear. The fact that I was done playing would've been clear once some time had passed, and I hadn't signed back with the Cardinals or any other team. Maybe people would've thought I couldn't get another job. Either way, I was okay with the idea of fading to black, and my legacy becoming "What ever happened to that dude Rashard Mendenhall? He was pretty good for a few years, then he just vanished."

Ditto... And I almost 100% agree with his views on what pro sports have become... I hate to be the "remember when" guy, but, when a 26 year old is able to see reality so clearly, I think it's pretty evident that things have indeed changed and for the most part, not for the better...
Good luck Mendy...

Basically, Mendenhall says: (1) he has done everything he could do in football; (2) football has become more about entertainment than football; and (3) he no longer wishes to put his body at risk for the entertainment of others.

Mendenhall also explains that he has experienced hate and racism, presumably via the Internet. Possibly in response to his controversial remarks following the killing of Osama bin Laden in 2011.

Link.

Good read, thanks for the link. I think anyone that has watched football for a long time (or appreciates the history of the game itself) can understand where Mendy is coming from.
