The price for star quarterbacks increases yearly and Lamar Jackson could soon be the biggest beneficiary of this.
Baltimore Ravens coach John Harbaugh told reporters at the NFL league meetings that the team and Jackson have engaged in internal dialogue about a contract extension.
“There’s been conversations about that internally, I know. How far along that is or whatever I don’t know," Harbaugh said to reporters. "It’s going to continue to have to be addressed. Really with all those guys. You just have to manage that salary cap dance. Lamar is the main part of that because he’s the franchise player. That’s a possibility, I think. Sooner or later, it’s definitely gonna have to happen.”
Harbaugh went on to say the Ravens would make Jackson the richest player in the NFL.
"The value is the top. When Lamar gets paid, he's going to be the highest paid player in football, just like he was last time,” Harbaugh told reporters. “I think every contract he signs probably until he decides to hang up his cleats, he's going to be that guy."
Jackson inked a five-year, $260 million deal with the Ravens in 2023, making him the top-paid player in the NFL then. The Ravens star quarterback has since dropped to the ninth highest-paid QB in terms of annual salary.
The Ravens would seemingly want to get a contract extension done with Jackson before next offseason, when Jackson’s salary cap hit rises to $74.5, per Over the Cap.
NFL MOCK DRAFT: Expert predictions following major moves in free agency
Whenever Jackson gets paid, he will have earned it. Jackson is a two-time NFL MVP, three-time first-team All-Pro and four-time Pro Bowler. He narrowly missed winning his third MVP last year after leading the league in passer rating in what was his best statistical season throwing the football.
In 2024, Jackson became the first player in NFL history to pass for over 4,000 yards and rush more than 900 yards in the same season.
Jackson’s 6,173 rushing yards are the most ever by an NFL quarterback. His 20,059 passing yards and 166 touchdown passes rank second in Ravens franchise history.
