Ray Brown Finally Gets To Coach D.J. Humphries
As the assistant offensive line coach, Ray Brown was not among the top decision-makers when the Panthers prepared for the 2015 draft. But as luck would have it, the team’s braintrust was seriously considering a player at his position for their first-round pick.

So Brown did his due diligence on Florida left tackle D.J. Humphries, a raw-but-talented player who was projected to go near Carolina’s No. 25 overall selection.

Humphries grew up in Charlotte, and after a visit with the Panthers one day, Brown gave him a ride home. It was there, while having a conversation with Humphries and his father, D.J. Humphries, Sr., that Brown felt a connection blossom.

Cardinals took Humphries with the No. 24 overall selection in 2015, one spot ahead of the Panthers. "We were going to pick him," said Brown, assistant OL coach of Carolina at the time. Panthers chose LB Shaq Thompson at No. 25.

Will be interesting to see how DJH's negotiations play out with the FO. I hope he plays great, but even at a premium position it will be hard to give him a ton of guaranteed money with his injury history. Really needs to be on the field for 30 games next two years. Oh yeah, and play well while out there wouldn't hurt either!

If old knee deep can stay on the field for 16 games we might be able to see what we have in him. So far he hasn't proved a thing.

He's played really well when healthy. Not like he chose to get his knee rolled up on last year.

true. but by choice or not he cant manage to stay on the field. if that is the case this year we need to draft another LT

He's played FINE when healthy. Like among the middle 15 tackles in the NFL. He was thoroughly mediocre at RT and okay at LT in like 6 games in 2 years.

Oft-injured college prospect can't stay healthy as a pro. It's not his fault that he's constantly injured, but we don't have to pay him $8M a year to play 4 games, either.

Like most have already stated, this is the sink or swim year for Humphries. The year after next is his contract year so this year he really needs to show he is the LT going forward or he is just a de facto until we find one. If he doesn't really show anything until he contract year then I would be hesitant to give him big money for fear of regression. Next year's OT draft class has a lot of good prospects so if Humphries doesn't progress this year we could draft his replacement next year. His fifth year option was picked up and that carries a base salary of $9.6M, that is a large chunk of change, he better justify making that amount in his contract year.

He was playing good before he got hurt true but I want to see him play a full season to see if he can become a top twenty LT. so far I haven’t seen it from him yet.
