Not sure if the link below was already posted but this take was not exactly glowing on Ray Horton's impact in Cleveland. What a difference a year makes in terms of momentum and perception. Just goes to show you that no coach is as good or bad as his press clippings. A lot of stars need to aline - talent, front office, cap room injuries, scheme etc.

As of now Cleveland and Minnesota are the only two gigs left and two of the five jobs filled have gone to good candidates that happen to be minorities. I just don't see Horton getting one of the two remaining jobs and depending on who gets the head coaching gig he may be out of a job in Cleveland. If he has the experience of either being too upset to stay or the reputation of being too toxic to a new head coach his opportunities to be a head coach may have passed.

If it takes too long to name a coach in Cleveland he may even lose his chance to be a DC in Tennessee or other places.

Bowles isn't all that either. The reason that the Card's D is as good as it is--is talent. Pure and simple. And a D coordinator that doesn't mess it up.

Right. Think how much $$$ the Bidwill's could save by simply letting them coach themselves.

(If it's just a matter of talent on the "D" side... explain Detroit?)

I started a whole post on this. It is not that a coach does not have an impact, but it is the talent level with a coach smart enough to put them in a position to win. Horton and Bowles will do this with the right talent. It is pure conjecture, but let's say we did lose Bowles and say acquire Wade Phillips who just might be a better defensive coach, our defense could actually be even better... provided we still have Dansby :)

Horton has been given permission to seek another job. Doubt it will be with Whiz who said today that he wants a hybrid and will not run a base 3-4 two gap.

He states, "If the D coordinator doesn't mess it up".

Thus Detroit's DC is messing it up, plus the Lions secondary is horrible, and there linebackers are not that good either.

Good coaching, especially good position coaching, makes good talent better! Pure and simple. Calais Campbell and the rest of the defensive line played much better last season because of the coaching of Brentson Buckner IMO.

And the offensive line played better because Harold Goodwin and the other O-line coaches did a better job of coaching them up than Russ Grimm did.

Neither position group had an infusion of better talent, but both objectively performed better because of the quality of their position coaches IMO.

There Was good talent and yes the coaching was noticably better and more individualised when it needed to be. The schemes were obviously more flexible to conform with the talent on board. After trades and injuries they had to adapt and did. Great job adjusting and playing to strengths.
