Good stuff from Urban about Wright. I like what they are doing on ST's...
Making the Wright choice
The Cardinals brought in running back Jason Wright for a visit today, something that normally creates only a faint blip on the radar. The five-year veteran
hasn’t done much statistically in his career, and last year for the Browns had just 85 yards rushing on 23 carries (although he did have 22 catches out of the backfield). His signing – if it were to happen – won’t cause a stir.
But I briefly got a chance to talk with Wright in between his conversation with head coach Ken Whisenhunt and a chalk talk with some of the offensive assistants. And after that, I came away thinking he’d be a great addition not only to the team but also the locker room. That was how impressive he came across to me; I would guess it would be the same for the coaches (and perhaps not a shock for a guy who had a double major of psychology and pre-medicine at Northwestern). He also showed why Whisenhunt and the organization have a pretty good selling technique to free agents.
“Here, it’s been made a clear people will earn a spot by their merits,” Wright said. “That’s a rare thing in the NFL. There’s a lot of other stuff that goes on in other organizations. That is one of the big draws here. You have a projected role when you come in but you are able to earn an increase on that by your work. That is attractive.”
Wright said he could go back to Cleveland and the Jets have shown some interest. But he also said “everything has been great” on his visit to Arizona.
The situation is this: the Cardinals need running backs. Wright averaged 4.6 yards a carry in 2007 on just 60 carries, so he has shown he has some ability. His receiving ability would make him a candidate to replace J.J. Arrington. Besides, Wright is very good on special teams, and after signing Keith Lewis earlier and knowing Lewis’ ability on special teams and then chasing long snapper Mike Leach, it’s obvious that was an area the Cards decided to upgrade. Said Wright, “What I am looking at now is continuing to become a dominant special teams player, which I think happened in my time in Cleveland. I want to really become the best special teams running back in the league. That’s one of my goals.”
Again, if it happens, it’s not a sexy signing. But sometimes the best signings are the ones no one notices.
