Decent Reciever out of the backfield but he is mostly a special teamer. Even as a ST'er he is just average with 10 tackles.

From my reading it seems like he is very strong on the blitz pick up. Doesn't really seem like all that great a player to bring in.

He has started a couple of times so maybe they are just trying to bring in at least one cheap insurance RB so they can finally drop Edge and get 5 mill more in cap space?????

He started for Lewis a couple of times two years ago and he is a tough runner with some burst. He would be a GREAT role player in our backfield and fits perfectly into a 2 back system. He seems to be like Ward, the more you use him the worse he gets, so using him for 5-10 carries will be a real spark.

Looks like they're ready to move on. On their time

At least wright is still a young back, only in his 4th yr.

Rhodes would be nice to bring in at a bargain as well.

Good stuff from Urban about Wright. I like what they are doing on ST's...

Making the Wright choice

The Cardinals brought in running back Jason Wright for a visit today, something that normally creates only a faint blip on the radar. The five-year veteran hasn’t done much statistically in his career, and last year for the Browns had just 85 yards rushing on 23 carries (although he did have 22 catches out of the backfield). His signing – if it were to happen – won’t cause a stir.

But I briefly got a chance to talk with Wright in between his conversation with head coach Ken Whisenhunt and a chalk talk with some of the offensive assistants. And after that, I came away thinking he’d be a great addition not only to the team but also the locker room. That was how impressive he came across to me; I would guess it would be the same for the coaches (and perhaps not a shock for a guy who had a double major of psychology and pre-medicine at Northwestern). He also showed why Whisenhunt and the organization have a pretty good selling technique to free agents.

“Here, it’s been made a clear people will earn a spot by their merits,” Wright said. “That’s a rare thing in the NFL. There’s a lot of other stuff that goes on in other organizations. That is one of the big draws here. You have a projected role when you come in but you are able to earn an increase on that by your work. That is attractive.”

Wright said he could go back to Cleveland and the Jets have shown some interest. But he also said “everything has been great” on his visit to Arizona.

The situation is this: the Cardinals need running backs. Wright averaged 4.6 yards a carry in 2007 on just 60 carries, so he has shown he has some ability. His receiving ability would make him a candidate to replace J.J. Arrington. Besides, Wright is very good on special teams, and after signing Keith Lewis earlier and knowing Lewis’ ability on special teams and then chasing long snapper Mike Leach, it’s obvious that was an area the Cards decided to upgrade. Said Wright, “What I am looking at now is continuing to become a dominant special teams player, which I think happened in my time in Cleveland. I want to really become the best special teams running back in the league. That’s one of my goals.”

Again, if it happens, it’s not a sexy signing. But sometimes the best signings are the ones no one notices.

Sounds like a solid addition. I am glad that we are focusing on improvement in special teams, I just still have a nagging feeling we have other areas that are more important to focus on.

Again, I think almost everybody agrees we can use help at:

RB
OL, particularly center
TE
Pass rushing DE/OLB

Can we take care of all of these in the draft? Possibly, but I'd at least prefer to have 2 of the 4 addressed before the draft.

He's not the Wright I initially hope for, but I would like this signing. He's far from the answer to the speed back question, but he seems like a solid guy and a decent third string back.

4.6, 40 time coming out of college.

Profile from his draft year:
Jason Wright (Northwestern - 4SR) 5'10" 200 4.6
After being converted from WR in 2001, he earned the starting tailback job in 2002 and took off. Rushed for 1,234 and 12 TDs and grabbed 27 passes for another 266 yards last season. Very intelligent player, 2002 1st Academic Team All-American.

Started 2003 season strong, with 41-196-4 in a win at Kansas. Had 3 other 100-yard games before he suffered an ankle injury against Wisconsin on 10/25/03, but still put up 97 and a TD on the ground and caught a 53-yard TD pass in an upset of the Badgers. The following week, although he got the start, the ankle limited him in a loss at Purdue. He had only 7 rushes for 28 yards and uncharacteristically coughed up a fumble, after 383 consecutive touches without one. The next game against PSU, he saw only 6 carries for 21 yards and a TD. 4JR Noah Herron carried the load, going 35-180-0. Against Michigan, playing from behind was more responsible than lingering ankle problems in him getting only 9-34-0. Herron also continued to see work after his breakout. Still struggling with the ankle, Wright had a huge day in his final Big Ten game, running for 251 yards and 4 TDs on 42 carries at Illinois. He finished his collegiate career with another superb effort in a loss to Bowling Green in the Motor City Bowl. He had 336 all-purpose yards, including an 88-yard kick-off return and a 77-yard TD run, finishing with 237 rushing yards. Apparently, he took offense to being called slow by an announcer during the Hawaii Bowl, and set out to prove a point. He did. Finished second in rushing yards and first in rushing TDs in the Big Ten.

2003 Big Ten 2nd Team All-Conference. Overshadowed by Fred Russell in the Hula Bowl, but was the most utilized Aina weapon, posting a solid 43 yards on 11 carries and adding 2 passes for 17 yards. Very instinctive with a slashing running style, is more quick and elusive than a burner, but still has good speed. He is an excellent receiver, solid blocker, and was one of the best kick returners in the country in 2002 (those duties have been much more limited this year). That type of versatility is a strength. One strike against him is he has padded his stats against some lesser competition, and struggled against some of the better teams, but the timing of the ankle injury impacted that, as well.

To hell with sexy signings... Sometimes you need the grit and guts pickups.

I've been a fan of Wright since his days at Northwestern. I think if Arizona gets him, he'd be a fine compliment for Hightower.

He's not going to get the same response James did when he signed here, but the guy will quietly play above his contract. I'm almost certain of that.

I agree Diamondback Jay...Whis and company are slowly making me see something I have not been used to and that is a Cardinal team building a solid team which does not look as much at the big name but what the talent has to offer and the level of growth they see in players that other teams had ignored. Wright looked more like he had the skills of an everydown back in college than Arrington showed in college considering the offense/formation JJ ran out of. Not saying he will be our main back at all, but Wright is more than his play in the NFL as shown so far
