Real Steel

Release Date: October 7, 2011 (conventional theaters and IMAX)
Studio: DreamWorks Pictures
Director: Shawn Levy
Screenwriter: John Gatins
Genre: Action, Drama
MPAA Rating: PG-13 (for some violence, intense action and brief language)
Website: SteelGetsReal.com | WRB.com | Facebook

Starring: Hugh Jackman, Evangeline Lilly, Dakota Goyo, Anthony Mackie, Kevin Durand

Plot Summary: A gritty, white-knuckle, action ride set in the near-future, where the sport of boxing has gone hi-tech, "Real Steel" stars Hugh Jackman as Charlie Kenton, a washed-up fighter who lost his chance at a title when 2000-pound, 8-foot-tall steel robots took over the ring. Now nothing but a small-time promoter, Charlie earns just enough money piecing together low-end bots from scrap metal to get from one underground boxing venue to the next. When Charlie hits rock bottom, he reluctantly teams up with his estranged son Max (Dakota Goyo) to build and train a championship contender. As the stakes in the brutal, no-holds-barred arena are raised, Charlie and Max, against all odds, get one last shot at a comeback.

I took my 11 year-old son to this last weekend. We had an AWESOME time.

A gritty, white-knuckle, action ride

Not really...this film was all about the story and characters.

I loved the homage to Rocky. If you like Rocky, you'll like this movie.

Why do the robots sit on stools between rounds?

Robots get tired too Mulli.

Seriously, it's not as silly as the summary makes it sound. I rarely recommend films, but I endorse this one!

Hugh Jackman moved up into my top 5 actors after this one.

The first time I saw a trailer for this I was in a theater and my first words were,"Oh no, Rock'em Sock'em Robots"

Apparently it is a good movie and I will see it...but I still think.."he knocked his block off!!" whenever I see an ad for this, lol

You'll see that it pays homage to that too.

My whole family loved the movie, it's not some classic or anything but it's a good solid movie.

My power was out since Saturday from the Nor'easter and I finally got power back about an hour ago so the last few days I went to the movies since that was an easy way to kill time and stay warm. I saw this today and it was enjoyable. The early (underground) fights were awful. The opponents were way too over the top for me. The parts of the movie that weren't about the fighting were great. Really liked when Hugh Jackman and his kid were trying to get along. Too many things in the fights pissed me off to truly like this movie.

I took my nephew to see it and we were both entertained, which is kindof the point of movies right? Much more a story of a man learning how to be a father than Rockem Sockem Robots, although it was that too. My nephew LOVED it. It was very nostalgic because he reminded me so much of me and my friends and how we were when we saw all the cheesy 80's fight films like Rocky's and Bloodsport, Over the Top, No Retreat No Surrender, American Ninja, etc... During the last fight he was bouncing up and down in his seat and doing his best to be quiet. So much fun, I was laughing. Glad his generation got one of these that didn't take itself too seriously and didn't completely suck.

LOVED all the 80's references, from Over The Top, to Rocky IV.

The scene in the final fight where Atom was getting killed and then finally landed a punch and Zeus stumbled back, stunned, was so awesome. I realize it's not the best Rocky movie by a long shot but I could hear the dialogue from Rocky IV as I watched it.... "HE'S CUT! THE RUSSIAN'S CUT AND ITS A BAD CUT!" Very funny tribute to a movie that alot of us 80's kids liked.

Also, Evangeline Lilly is simply a BEAUTIFUL woman, I never watched LOST so I realize I'm gettin on this bandwagon late but wow, she is a gorgeous woman isn't she? That was the first thing I'd seen her in.

I thought the CGI was amazing, very convincing without having every single scene happen in slow motion. It was just an entertaining movie. I wont be telling my kids about it in 10 years nor will it win an oscar, but atleast it made an effort to have a plot, predictable as it was.

I know! I watched that movie a hundred times growing up. I just knew that was going to happen when Atom was getting pounded. I heard that dialogue playing in my head too!

Glad someone feels the same! Good times forusre.

One of the best "momentum shifts" ever! lol.

NO PAIN! no pain NO PAIN! no pain NO PAIN! TAKE IT TO HIM! lol with all the flaws that movie had you sure can have a good time watching it. Watch Rocky's trainer just get IN THE MIX after the 2nd round when Rocky cuts Drago. He's out there throwing dudes in the ropes, slamming them on the ground, Paulie ofcourse is doing nothing wich is even funnier. Good times forsure. :)

That's what I loved about all about the Rocky films. They were never about being the biggest or strongest, just about being the toughest SOB out there and able to take more than anyone else and still be standing. :) Ok Sorry for hijacking but seriously, Real Steel isn't the best movie you'll ever see, but if you like the movies we're talkin about, you'll like this one. Give your self a pass and pretend you are 12 again, you'll have fun. :)

How old is your nephew?

I have an 8 year old who wants to see it, but I'm worried that it may have scenes that I'm not prepared to talk to him about yet. Are there any in-your-face sex references or scenes? How's the language (I'm okay with a few curses here and there, I just don't want to take him to see a film where it's F'n pervasive)? Is the violence mostly robot on robot action?

Took my 7 year old and he loved it. Its definitely not over the top in any of the areas your concerned about. No in your face "sex scenes or dialogue" at all. Most violence is Robot vs. Robot and there are certainly a few swear word but definitely not over the top at all.

Take him bro you guys will enjoy it I'm sure.

Awesome! I wore out my VHS tape watching from the moment his plane arrives in Russia forward. Paulie (when they arrive) "Are you planning to grow reindeer or something? How the heck are you supposed to train here? What a depressing vacation. What about the Rose Bowl game? I hope they have my comics here." Hilarious.

I'd say this film is borderline PG.

I just received the Bluray disk from Netflix!

I forgot to post this back in November. I bought a ford excursion on the day my son and I watched this movie. We decided to name the truck Real Steel and I ordered these plates:

Kids love this movie. I was pleasantly surprised. I was expecting a horrible mess of a "B" movie and was wondering what the hell HJ was thinking signing on to this?

So much better versus what I was expecting and the fact this movie had heart downright surprised me.

I thought this movie was bad. Apparently the writer wrote this movie while watch any of the Rocky movies while playing with his Rock'em, Sock'em, robots set...

The kid was the best actor our of the bunch.

I'm with DCR on this. It was a fun movie. Jackman's despicableness wasn't so over the top that I didn't mind his turn for his son. The movie was very much Over The Top mixed with Rocky.

I liked the ending with Lily watching the kid watching Jackman.
