Honey Badger was on the TV special the Cards broadcast from UoP before the draft. He said his training and rehab was coming along well but he was going to follow what the trainers and doctors have told him: he's ready when he's ready. He's not set a date. They've not set a date. It was clear, though, that he wants to play on opening day.

He is young, he is relatively small (bigger guys take longer to heal, more stress on the ligaments). He has that going for him. I would not be surprised at opening day. I don't want him to be out all year, but I also don't want him to come back before he is healed.

Exactly and considering he is already making explosive movements in May it doesn't seem crazy to think that he might be ready for the start of the season.

I was thinking the same. I absolutely agree about not rushing him back. But he's recovering quite fast IMO. Sept isn't all that unrealistic. I think due to being young he will heal quicker than expected. And him being so light, he will be able to put his weight on it sooner to rehab quicker than normal as well. Plus his competitive nature wont let him wait and miss games. But that's just how I view the situation

Honey Badger's going to treat this injury like a cobra. It bit him, and put him down for a while, but you can't keep Honey Badger down. He's going to wake up, kill this injury, and have it for breakfast.

Cardinals G.M. says Tyrann Mathieu could play in opener

All indications have been that Cardinals safety Tyrann Mathieu had been doing well in rehab for his December knee injury.

And now Cardinals General Manager Steve Keim says that it’s going well enough that playing in the opener is a real possibility.

I really liked this quote from the article.

“I told him, ‘Ty, don’t listen to anybody because nobody can tell you and pinpoint the exact return date. That’s up to you.’ And he’s a machine. He’s the kind of guy that I really think can come back a lot earlier than people anticipated.”

Players are really put in a bind when it comes to injuries and when to return to the field. If it takes too long (in the eyes of the coaching staff), the player's heart, desire, and committment to the team are brought into question. Ryan Williams is a case in point. If the player gets back on the field too soon, they turn the injury into a source of chronic long-term pain and never get back to their previous performance level. Beannie Wells is a case in point. Either outcome gets you cut and your career cut short.

We got too many old school coaches who probably have the philosophy that a player has to 'play through pain.' I hope for TM's sake, they give him time to heal and not get him on the field before he is ready. I also hope they make the decision on his behalf should he be the one trying to hurry his return. His type of injury used to be career-ending. With modern surgical techniques and rehab, it moved up to a year-long rehab. With AP coming back so soon, now the expectation is a few months.

I think a lot of the forum members have it right by wanting to sit him----Cards need to find themselves another FS/slot DB and not ruin his chance for long-term success by pushing him onto the field before he is healed.

really not crazy about this. hope to be proven wrong. but Keim is from the same FO that put pressure on Wells to come back months after micro-fracture and Williams to come back after a patella tendon tear. Just don't see the value of saying this in the media to put extra pressure on the kid.
