Last night Mike Mayock, Scott Pioli, and Mike Tannenbaum were talking the quarterbacks in this years draft. Mayock was asked if the draft were today how many QB's would go in the first round and he responded that 2 were possible. Pioli and Tannenbaum countered by saying they agreed that right now 2 were most likely, but as the draft creeps closer they could see up to 4 quarterbacks taken in round #1. Mayock said that it is obvious that the 3 teams that need a QB the most (Kansas City, Arizona, Buffalo) all have top 10 selections and in his opinion none of the QB's available this year warrant a top 10 pick.

All 3 agreed that there will be a ton of trade activity this year at the end of round #1 with teams like the Chiefs, Cardinals, and Bills trying hard to trade back up into the back of round #1 to take the Quarterback. Mayock speculated that teams may be a little bit more enamored with Matt Barkley than what most of us would think. He said that there is some horrible USC tape this year and Barkley was part of the problem. However, he said there is some great Barkley tape from his junior season and that is the case with alot of the quarterbacks this year (Glennon, Nassib, and especially Tyler Wilson).

Mayock thinks that once coaches get a chance to interview the quarterbacks, Ryan Nassib will really start to move up because he is a really smart guy.

Really interesting stuff.

I think the most interesting Mock exercises for the Cardinals will involve stacking a Top 38 Board and mock drafting to where the Cards pick in Round 2.

Will there come a point somewhere in the late 20's where the Cards might try to trade up to secure a QB and, if so, which ones would they be interested most in at that point in the draft?

I know that most who watched Ryan Nassib in the bowl game were not impressed because he floated some deep passes in that horrible weather. I caught a couple of his home games (domed stadium) on TV and was really impressed. Nassib has terrific control of the huddle and it was pretty obvious from what I saw that he ran a very complex pro style offense.

If Nassib is on the Cards radar, we may have to get into a bidding war with Buffalo if both teams opt to wait until the late 1st round to make their move on a quarterback. I wouldn't be suprised is Marrone (new Bills coach/Nassib's college coach) pulls the trigger on Nassib with that #9 overall selection because the Bills will know that teams will be trying to get Nassib with that late 1st/early 2nd round selection.

For reasons involving (1) Marrone and (2) geography, Nassib might be considered a "territorial pick.". i liked the way the game seems to slow down for him but am still looking for that special spark that separates the really-good from the ordinary.

Interesting. I have to ask if there are any QBs available in this draft that have the potential to eventually be better than Ryan Fitzpatrick, Kevin Kolb, and Matt Cassell.

If not why waste a draft pick on one? Might as well wait until next year.

Or we could trade Kolb to KC, they send Cassell to Buffalo and we get Ryan Fitzpatrick. :p

IMO...the sleeper/steal at QB in this draft will be Tyler Bray....great physical specimen...decent football IQ....reliable accuracy.....strong competetive desire....and a set of nuttz that would make Brett Favre jealous.....

With the right coaching staff to influence his early development this kid will be a monster in the NFL.......with the wrong staff he will be a major flop...has a short 3/4 delivery and some maturity issues....also a non vocal, quiet, lead by action type field general ala early Eli Manning.....so the right staff will be crucial in determining if he has a career in the nfl

Bill Polian has been touting Landry Jones---says he's heard nothing but raves from Bob Stoops and his staff (says he is a fan of Stoops and the job he does and trusts his input)---cites his leadership, his production, his ability to make all the throws and his maturity (he's married, Polian pointed out).

Or street smarts from Manti T'eo.

(couldn't resist, he's plastered all over NFLN right now)

Strictly a gut feeling borne of ignorance, but I get the feeling Landry Jones started out his college career like a house-afire, but then slowly regressed so that his production tailed off.

If true, it raises the questions of whether the quality of his surrounding cast at Oklahoma might have slipped or what the likelihood is that - with quality pro coaching - Landry can "recapture the magic." Given the reputation of our current coaches as teachers, maybe you go back to Jones' sophomore or junior year and take a fresh look.

What say you?

Minus the QB and 1 or 2 wr's the OK team was just not all that good. The OL was below average, not much of a running game, they tried to spread the ball around to other wr's who did not make plays.

The OK defense also struggled quite a bit as well.

You are supposed to get better with more experience. Not steadily get worse and worse.

Landry is an option round 6+ strictly.

Landry Jones, 6-4, 218, Oklahoma

2009 3198 yds/58.1%/7.12ypa/26-14 td/int/130.8 qb rating
2010 4718...../65.6.../7.65...../38-12...../146.3
2011 4463...../63.2.../7.94...../29-15...../141.6
2012 4267...../66.1.../7.69...../30-11...../144.6

Looks pretty consistent, doesn't it?

It's not like he's playing against cupcake defenses either.

Very consistent especially when you take into consideration the supporting cast not being as strong this past season for OK.

Tebow had better college #'s. Case Keenum and Colt Mccoy are statistically 2 of the best of all time. And if #'s are all you care about, then we should take Geno Smith and call it a day, because is #'s are fantastic.

Watch him play. He makes really, really bad decisions. Some bad throws. Hes not overtly comfortable in the pocket with pressure.

Im not saying hes horrible. I am saying hes not a franchise QB and therefore not worth the wasted pick.

Bill Poilan knows a little about drafting QBs---he's high on Jones---I too saw the mistakes and the upside, and it leaves question marks---but, this is where coaching can make a huge difference.

My original point was to question whether or not he was worth trading up for from #38; I never suggested he was projected to be a franchise QB.

If your major knock on him is "poor decision-making" and discomfort under pressure, then I again pose the question: "Can Arians and Moore feel they can coach him to make better decisions and operate better under pressure?"

You must not watch much BIG 12 football if you think that's the case. The BIG 12 is the worst defensive conference in the country.

I realize stats are way overrated, but the two most prolific and consistent college QBs stats wise were Geno Smith and Landry Jones. Both threw for a ton of yards, had high completion %, and excellent TD to Int ratios. That's what you want in the NFL is dudes that are uber consistent year over year. Look at most of the great ones and you'll see the same trend. It's sorta like the best OLB / rush backers, which always rock the explosiveness category when it comes to drills - long jump, vert, 3 cone, and short shuttle. The template is obvious!!!
