Really interesting comments last night by Mayock/Pioli regarding quarterbacks.

I realize stats are way overrated, but the two most prolific and consistent college QBs stats wise were Geno Smith and Landry Jones. Both threw for a ton of yards, had high completion %, and excellent TD to Int ratios. That's what you want in the NFL is dudes that are uber consistent year over year. Look at most of the great ones and you'll see the same trend. It's sorta like the best OLB / rush backers, which always rock the explosiveness category when it comes to drills - long jump, vert, 3 cone, and short shuttle. The template is obvious!!!
Coincidentally, both played in the Big 12. I'm not ripping them but you have to factor that in. I mean when the games point totals are typically played in, or above, the 70's, it lends to pretty impressive stats for all offensive players.

So you say with such certainty....

If you have a different opinion why don't you tell us what it is instead of sniping at his post?

I've seen some of your football related stuff and it's very well done but you have been sniping at posts so much I'd swear you were Crazy Canuck sneaking back in with a different screen name.

My original point was to question whether or not he was worth trading up for from #38; I never suggested he was projected to be a franchise QB.

Its one in the same.

If you are making that sort of move to get a guy, he better damn well be a franchise guy.

Last night Mike Mayock, Scott Pioli, and Mike Tannenbaum were talking the quarterbacks in this years draft.

Heard it also. Was wondering if 2 recently terminated GMs, who drafted/acquired QB disasters, were worth listening to on the subject.

You must not watch much BIG 12 football if you think that's the case. The BIG 12 is the worst defensive conference in the country.

Pac 12 and Big 12. Coincidence that they have historically had a steady list of bust QBs.

When I listen to NFLN's ex-GMs, Casserly and Pioli seem to know what they are talking about. Tannenbaum seems clueless as a talent evaluator.

I saw a couple of Landry Jones games. He can make every throw and is an accurate downfield passer. But he usually had great protection at O.U. and when pressured, he was not very effective. I'm worried about how he'd handle protection breakdowns in the NFL. That said, there is a lot there to work with there and I'd spend our third-rounder on him if he's still on the board.

So does anyone remember Matthew stafford being a cerebral QB in college? Is he one now?

Yet, I don't recall people questioning his decision making like I see with Geno Smith and EJ Manuel.

Interesting....

Interesting....

Mark Richt runs a pro set at Georgia and he directed a pro set at FSU as OC. As an ex QB he grooms QBs fairly well. Maybe it was a given that Stafford was well coached because of Richt.

I have no idea where the poor decision making comes from with Geno Smith.

Maybe they did not see his 8 td 0 picks game against Baylor.

You know more about this than I do, but who are these QB's Richt has groomed?

At FSU

Charlie Ward and Chris Weinke , both Heisman winners.

@ Georgia

David Greene,D J Shockley, Stafford and Aaron Murray.

He's still pissed at U of Miami that they chose Jim Kelly over him and he backed Kelly up.:D

I, and I'm sure others, have reservations about posters expressing themselves in absolutes. It doesn't take more than a line to make that point. Thanks for the earlier compliment, I try.

What we don't know are which weaknesses from each QB are correctable with good (Arians-caliber) coaching and which ones aren't.

You cant use that arguement for Smith. He only played one year in the Big 12 and 2 others in the Big East. Say what you want about the oversall competition in the Big East, their defenses were pretty stout.

I think it's interesting that while BA is somewhat sticking up for the offensive line in interviews, he hasn't had much positive to say about the Cardinals quarterbacks with the exception of Kevin Kolb. And even there, he's somewhat muted in his praise. I suspect we'll going to "door #2" even if it's just for a backup like Drew Stanton.

3rd round trade involves 49ers and Cards. Alex Smith. Actually the Chiefs will pull the trigger first 5 spots before the Cardinals can.

Successful QB's in College who suck in the NFL have three things in common...

Tebow had better college #'s. Case Keenum and Colt Mccoy are statistically 2 of the best of all time. And if #'s are all you care about, then we should take Geno Smith and call it a day, because is #'s are fantastic.

Watch him play. He makes really, really bad decisions. Some bad throws. Hes not overtly comfortable in the pocket with pressure.

Im not saying hes horrible. I am saying hes not a franchise QB and therefore not worth the wasted pick.

Successful QB's in College who suck in the NFL have three things in common...

1 they are all run and no throw... Tebow
2. they are too small 6'2 or shorter
3. They have no arm stregnth... Jones is none of those

Good stuff, I'm not a huge believer in the QB having to be huge but it does stand up. They gotta be able to throw though. Welcome to the casa vato.

Yes its Consistent Considering 2183 passes

Landry Jones, 6-4, 218, Oklahoma

2009 3198 yds/58.1%/7.12ypa/26-14 td/int/130.8 qb rating
2010 4718...../65.6.../7.65...../38-12...../146.3
2011 4463...../63.2.../7.94...../29-15...../141.6
2012 4267...../66.1.../7.69...../30-11...../144.6

Looks pretty consistent, doesn't it?

It's not like he's playing against cupcake defenses either.

Thats very consistant, but Whats even more amazing is that Jones threw the ball 2183 times.. That gives him more times to mess up and make mistakes and be pressured and only 54 sacks. so his 63% is very impressive..
700 Times more than Geno Smith
1485 more times than Ej Manual

So yes his pressure rep is overblown..
Manuel had 59 sacks and Geno had 79, Dysert had 153
Just taking the sack isnt being good at pressure
