According to The Hollywood Reporter, MGM said at the Cannes Film Festival that Red Dawn, John Milius' 1984 movie about a group of American rebels fighting Soviet forces, is a candidate for a remake.

Maybe they are just gonna remake all of Swayze's movies...Like he never existed.

No no no, you got it all wrong. They're remaking all of Lea Thompson's movies in which she had little to no impact on them ... which is all them except the Back to the Future trilogy.

Or maybe they're remaking all the movies in which Swaze and Jennifer Grey starred in together.

So we can expect another Howard the Duck?

So will it be Al Qaeda or North Korea playing the role of the Soviet Union/Cuba invaders?

or are they not aware the Soviet Union ceased to exist in 1991?

Can't they just make a killer bee movie with really kill special effects.

This is one of my favorite movies. I'm not sure how they could do a remake and have it relevant to todays world.

Wolverines = insurgents or terrorists by todays definitions?

Dude, way worse. Wolverines = NRA members. How else could they have that kind of arsenal on hand? This movie, if it's done right, will make the anti-gun lobby turn violently shrill. It will be like Kramer being sent into seizures by the sound of Mary Hart's voice.

There are a lot of bad ideas in the world...

This lengthens the list.

Yep the thing that made that movie work was it played upon fears and emotions we all somewhat had about communism at that time.

These days those fears are largely about terrorism.

Not sure I want to see a remake. Although I thought the ending of the original movie was sort of lame. At the time I saw the movie I just thought it was so cool to basically seeing a bunch of kids kick ARSE.

Classic? No. Cult classic? Maybe if you were a young Republican.

I can only think of three possible treatments:

- The remain faithful to the original storyline with only tweaks to make the politics modern, which can only happen if this is being funded by the U.S. Army as part of their new recruitment agenda (you laugh, but we've done stories about the U.S. Army holding network gaming parties for high schoolers -- SOCOM etc. -- and their recruiting HQ).

- They're actually going to flip this on its head and turn it into an anti-war message

- They're going to do it as satire.

Those are the only three legitimate options as I see it, none of which will make fans of the original (or those who are still willing to admit they're fans) happy.

But any way you look at it, there's one guarantee: IT'S GOING TO SUCK SO BAD YOU'LL HAVE TO SEE IT ANYWAY.

Gad, you're letting your politics shine through waaaay too much by basically saying you like it more if you're a warmonger. Yeah, okay, the movie was geared against our enemies but, ya know, it was made during the cold war when there was a very real threat of military action against us.

That said, a classic and a cult classic both. The remake will NOT be good and I will NOT be watching it.
