But HR isn't the same exact player DB is. There's some versatility we're losing out of our $LB with HR probably playing a more traditional linebacker role. HR is more likely to come up to the line of scrimmage than he is drop back into coverage as much as Deone, just because of the size difference.

Agreed with you though - Deone doesn't come back and just completely take over for HR in week one unless HR has looked really lost.

While Reddick is likely a step back lets not pretend like Deone is good in coverage, in fact his struggles in coverage are what make me scratch my head whenever anyone says to move him back to Safety

I'm admittedly a bigger fan of Deone than most and think his coverage skills are better than many give him credit for.

Covering from an SS slot is so much easier than from the ILB slot. Been there done that.

Haha I'd tend to agree from personal experience too.

Unfortunately my career was cut short by a tragic lack of talent.
I was big and slow so covering was a LOT easier at SS but I was a better ILB and leaving coverage to the fast guys.

Mine was cut short because I didnt want to play the position I should have been playing, TE. I wanted to play Defense instead. Looking back now, the coaches were putting me in the right spot for my build, I just wanted to hit people so I didnt like it.

I have great SS instincts when it comes to playing, taking proper angles, etc....I'm just slow.

I was faster and smaller but our coaches kind of just stuck us in a spot and let us mess it up until they switched us again. I finished up playing FS and WR, which was where I should have been all along.

I love it. I hope Reddick takes the spot and never gives it up. I've never liked Buc as a linebacker. He is an in the box strong safety that should never have been drafted in the first round.

I can see Buc filling in for Reddick when he is used on the outside to rush the passer and be put back at SS where he belongs.

I myself hate the SS position. If I was the D.C. I would have three cornerbacks and a free safety. I think Reddick and Dansby would be a much better duo inside. I would start Reddick day one and not look back. Of course I also would have kept Washington and had him be the starter with Reddick going forward. I'm still hoping the Cards bring him back at a reduced salary.

Hopefully Reddick uses the extra reps to get a solid start into his NFL career. Hopefully Buc gets healthy. Once Dansby calls it a career, Reddick-Buc will be a deadly duo in the mold of Kuechly-Davis. Not as physical maybe, but even faster. That's the direction the league is drifting towards, and the Cards are well ahead of the curve. Well done.

if reddick wil confirm ihis first round status i dont see him being replaced by bucannon
and this could lead the coach staff to use bucannon in the position he played in college

Possible injuries were one of the reasons I was advocating keeping Washington through camp to see if he had an impact and could play. I know they saved 3 mill in cap space and wanted him to play at the minimum but the same thing could have been done in camp.

People are putting a lot of faith in Reddick and assume he's going to be good. I'm hesitant to anoint a rookie who has never played the position before in his life except for a couple senior bowl practices.

I think that the $LB position gives Reddick a little more freedom to be aggressive and play on instincts. You make a good point about experience...it will be a challenge, that's for sure.

That said, there is a good chance that Deone will be back for the start of the regular season.

While it would be good to re-sign Sio Moore, Gabe Martin and Alani Fua know the defense and add depth and UDFA Tre-Von Johnson is an intriguing $LB option (depth-wise) if he has a good camp.
