They would be so stupid to tag him, if they really want Smith. KC isn't going to get a $35 million per year contract as a FA, and very few would trade for that 1 year deal, with no guarantees of a long term solution. Worse case scenario, the Skins end up with both on their roster in 2018, effectively costing $50 million+ for 2 starters...lol

Isnt the intent to find a suitor, remove the tag, and then have cousins traded for assets, with a team that will then sign him to a new deal? That would avoid the whole 2 firsts thing, right?

Either way, HA! Redskins are the worst.

He can't be traded, before signing a contract....so, if they tag him, he has to sign the tag to be traded. That means the team he goes to is committed to paying the $35 million, unless he agrees to renegotiate AFTER the trade.

Of course. My point is ALL this will be wink wink and ready to go. Thats how I read the article, and the problem with it is, once he signs the franchise offer, he then has say on who he goes to. Muddying things further.

I find it ridiculous the way everyone in life, once a gajillion dollars are involved, has blantantly obvious manners to skirt rules, regardless of industry, and then just go about their business as if they followed them.

Either way, watching it is sure fun.

Technically teams aren't allowed to talk to potential free agents until March 12th. That limits the ability of teams to sell themselves to Cousins. It really shifts the focus to dollars.

Cousins doesn't have to sign the tag, which would mean the Skins would be holding that enormous salary on the books...essentially Cousins could hold them hostage. Also, even if he signs the tag, it doesn't mean a team would have to give up 2 1sts to sign him. The Skins probably just want a 2nd, or even the 3rd rounder they gave up for Smith, and by tagging him, they lose their compensatory pick for him leaving in FA. Very risky for the Skins, financially speaking.

And, for the period that it takes to settle the Cousin's issue, that is $35m that can't be dedicated to acquiring Free Agents.

Smart play by the Redskins. They probably end up with a first round pick by trading him. The minimum would be a second rounder and some team WILL pony up the money and pick for Cousins. There are too many teams that are quarterback hungry.

no..incorrect... they can tag him, he doesnt need to sign it at all for it to be binding on his rights. Then he finds who he wants to play for, his agent informs said team Washington wants a second and a fifth to remove the tag, then based on that info they negotiate a deal. (NOTE: dont freak, the picks are just for examples sake)
Applying the tag does not bind any specific picks, it only binds Cousins "RIGHTS" to Washington...... all it does is let any team negotiating with him know they have to give something up to get him and that "something" will be known in advance to his agent.... my guess would be a second round pick.

This isn't all that surprising. It's been done before. Matt Cassell and Jared Allen are the first two that come to mind.

But yes, it is slightly risky. This is what I thought NE was going to do with Garoppolo initially.

Non-exclusive
The player is allowed to negotiate with other teams, but if a competing team makes a free agent offer, the original team has the right to match it. If they don’t match the offer, they get two first-round picks in compensation. In other words, this is basically a convoluted trade scenario.

this is the tag that applies. The team that currently owns the player has the right to set the level of compensation they want in return... the tag does not need to be signed until late June...which gives them four months to make a deal.
the ONLY reason Cousins would sign the tag is to screw the Skins... the non exclusive tag is basically designed for this exact scenario.

It doesnt really hurt Kirk... just slightly lowers his market value because a team will have to trade an asset to get him but in the history of the tag it has almost never been two firsts.

But...Washington has to "book" the value of the non-exclusive tag; monies that they can't use in Free Agency.

Not only that, but isn’t Washington at risk of being stuck with Cousins $$$ if they tag him and nobody wants to trade for him.

the money isnt booked until he signs it... which he never needs to do...because he wants out, and they are letting him out.

no they are not. If a deal cannot be worked out... all they have to do is pull the offer before he signs it..... it does not need to be signed until mid june,...and it wont hit the cap until it is signed

They really wouldn't be able to use the money...regardless if he signs it or not. If they use the money while they wait for him to sign it, and then all of a sudden he decides to sign...then they're over the cap and have to basically re-do everything. They also can't trade him until he signs, which puts the Skins in a precarious position.

thats true. But come on...do you really think Cousins is even going to be on the market an entire week?...
even if he is,... they can revoke the tag offer any time up until he signs it... you dont really think he takes it with him do you??
the ENTIRE Franchise tag system is designed so teams dont have to develop a good player then watch them walk away and get nothing in return... you can play what if?? what if?? all week long but it doesnt change the fact that this is what it is designed for and it is designed to favor the team that owns him...... and as of right now alex smith is not on their books.
