really??
Logic?? The franchise tag has been around for years...I find it surprising so many people have no idea how they work.

say the Cards are going to sign Jarvis Landry to a $14mil contract this season... they make their intentions known on march 20th.... but Landry does not sign the contract until may 15th....

when does that contract count against the Cardinals cap space? Right. May 15th.... the day it is signed.

thats true. But come on...do you really think Cousins is even going to be on the market an entire week?...
even if he is,... they can revoke the tag offer any time up until he signs it... you dont really think he takes it with him do you??
the ENTIRE Franchise tag system is designed so teams dont have to develop a good player then watch them walk away and get nothing in return... you can play what if?? what if?? all week long but it doesnt change the fact that this is what it is designed for and it is designed to favor the team that owns him...... and as of right now alex smith is not on their books.

But, Smith will be on Day 2 of the new League year, and unless you have the relevant reference on tags, it's my understanding that that figure is also in effect.

P.S - I think this is posturing and he'll be released.

Spare us the logic and give us the actual clause in the CBA.

Why not just trade for Foles? PHI probably won’t ask for a first or second and if his option is picked up it is actually a bargain at like $11M a year for 3 years.

Edit: It’s actually less, around $6M a year for 3 years, an absolute steal considering his body of work.

Foles may not want to be traded...and Philly may not be willing to let him go. With Foles and Wentz both, they might be thinking this aint their only trip to the Super Bowl over the next few years.

Cousins will go down in history as the most over paid QB in history... Unless you do the math for games played..... Leaf and J Russell would be hard to top. :p

If Foles is content to be Wentz's backup, I don't want him.... But, I doubt that he does.

It doesn't matter what Foles wants or how content he is. The fact is, he's under contract for at least 2018 and the Eagles control his short term future.

LOL...

Oh... I think 'wants and contentment' will be featured in his story in the not too distant.

generally speaking that is true. But Foles is a guy who was legit considering retirement a year ago... if he was gonna walk away then there is no guarantees he will just go play wherever he is traded. He might hang them up instead.

Which is why he won't be traded. Gotta wait one more year to get to Foles, IMO.

sorry...I dont mean to be wishy washy, lol... but his contract is actually designed for him to be traded this year...
could have been set up that way by Philly just to spread out the bonus...or maybe Nick wanted another shot at FA to try and get a starters job?

I dunno.... I think Philly trades a QB this year... but I also think the player will have some say in the situation he goes to.

They could hang on to Foles to make sure Wentz is back to 100%,... then trade Foles away in November right before the trade deadline.

I agree 100%, Philly will strike will the iron is hot. The market is at it's highest for Foles, so I can see Philly moving him. I am also thinking he won't mind as he is most likely looking for a place he can start, and AZ offers that.

Sam Bradford may have something to say about that.

I'm not a Bradford hater but that guy has to be the king of big contract.

I don't think the assumption about the Redskins tagging Cousins to trade him is right. They will non-exclusive franchise tag him so they can get the compensation picks (2 first rounders) when he signs somewhere else.

It's actually pretty smart by the Redskins to do this since pretty much everyone agrees he's signing somewhere else. There's still some risk that a team won't come forward, but if he does sign somewhere else they Skins will get Smith (trade) and two first round comp picks. Not to mention saving some cap space.

It is not a good risk, IMO. Nobody is going to give him a huge contract and two first round picks. I think everyone knows that they would eventfully cut him/resend the tag, so why pay?

The Redskins won't get two first round picks, but some team (that includes us), could pay a draft pick to beat out the competitors. He might not want to pick us over the Broncos, but if we traded a 5th to the Redskins for his rights, he might accept that he's not making it to Denver.

Not that I want it to happen that way, but it's possible.

While that is true we would be on the hook for 30 + million next year, and no guarantees for the loss of our pick other then one year 30+ million. Not worth it for anyone to make that deal. I'll go on record to say that (I think) this is pure fan speak and not coming from the redskins front office. There is no benefit to Washington to do this. IMO

That's not how trading for a franchised player works. Go back and look at Matt Cassel's deal.
