Went down the list of every LBer and DT, left as a restricted or unrestricted FA. Because I am stupid.
There are slim pickens.
Add your favorites, let me know if someone got swooped up and I missed it.
I've called the meeting of the brain trust because I've got a list of guys I want to know a little more about.
LBer
Akin Ayodele - 6'2" 246
+ he's played in a 3-4
- can he be effective in the right scheme as an outside player?
What I'd like to know: how's his baby bucket? Is that what you kids are calling a butt these days?
What I'm trying to say, in the most akward way possible is, does he carry his weight low or high? If we're going Steelers West on D (again, I guess) then what about a guy who's only a smidgen taller and a little lighter than their OLBers?
Marvin Mitchell - 6'3" 249
+ none that I'm aware of
- same questions as Ayodele, but has played in a 4-3 and not seen much action. Change of scheme?
Kirk Morrison - 6'0" 240
+ reliable against the run, not that effective in coverage. Covers ground well. Played in a 3-4 when he was with OAK, but I'm not sure which position.
- He's not great in coverage, which is weird for as slick as he while he's moving. To be fair I only have one OAK game, an 09 game vs KC. He looked really good though.
Matt Roth- 6'4" 272
+ he's from Iowa. No I will not shut up about it.
The team wants a guy like S. Bradley to be a early down ILB?
Here's your early down OLBer.
He can play and the fact that he's still available doesn't bother me (see first point).
He's a WOLB who can play the run and rush the passer, but ain't that great in coverage. Here's a bonus, he knows the 3-4.
- faded down the stretch last year, but was still a decent rusher.
Stylez G White - 6'3" 268
+ Mitch mentioned him and it got me thinking. He was drafted for a Tampa 2 which says rushing the passer is a first priority. That could be good.
- He has the name of an idiot.
- He doesn't have a lot of experience in coverage.
- He really does have the name of an idiot.
NT
Craig Terril - 6'2" 287
+ He's a veteran and as a backup according to the metrics the team doesn't go to crap when he's on the field. Sometimes that's enough for a reserve player.
- Not the ideal weight (fine, ridiculously then) for a NT. No idea if he can actually play the spot.
Clifton Ryan 6'2" 310
+ Right height, closer on the weigh. Plays the run well. Plays limited snaps, but may be more effective in a NT role.
- played in the STL 4-3 scheme previously.
Kelly Talavou 6'2" 350
+ That's a lot of person and it's going out, not up. He was on the Ravens and I tend to think they know what to look for in prototypical players.
- He's got bad knees. Maybe it's got something to do with the weight. Lott could help him out with that. Makes the knees feel better.
