Having been educated in the difference between a ring-leap and a stag-leap, a Tkatchev and a Yurchenko, I now have newfound respect for the unseen heroes of this sport: the nine judges who calculate the scores at major international events. Simone Biles may be pushing the sport forward with her astonishing acrobatics, but spare a thought for those who have to check whether her toes are sufficiently pointed.
