Replacement refs

I thought the 'replacement' officials did a decent job last night. They weren't perfect, but neither are the starters. If I'm the NFL, I don't cave to the referees' demands.

They were much better than I thought they would be. But we'll see how well they do over an entire slate of games this weekend.

Are you kidding? They were awful. Just off the top of my head, they called a personal foul clipping on a simple block in the back, and called a block in the back when a guy breathed on another guy. Awful, just awful.

officiating in the nfl has been getting progressively worse over the last five or six years.....stick with the new guys.

If the regular refs can make calls like the Victor Cruz non-fumble, I don't see the difference.

The regular refs make mistakes, too. These replacement refs aren't going to bring down the NFL. They were fine--not great--but fine.

I tend to agree, I saw the block in the back and called it right away. Then they call it clipping. I guess my point is if we can see it on TV and know the correct call how can they not get it right? Did any of them ever watch NFL games on TV?

Note that they were the BEST of the replacement refs. That crew will NOT be at the Cardinals Game Sunday....

we will have a much lower ranked crew of refs.

I'll agree the crew that did the Giants/Cowgirls game was solid, but that's like saying 1 out of 16 is good.

That's the difference between the Giants being SB Champs and staying at home for the entire post season. I am waiting for the replacements to have such a profound impact on a season before I call for their heads.

If the NLFRA is waiting for the replacements to look really bad in order to strengthen their position, they may have missed their window. I fully expect the replacements to get better each week, as they get acclimated to the speed and ability of NFL players.

Over the weekend, someone was on the radio talking about this. He recalled the 1981(?) traffic controller strike in which Reagan ended up firing them all and replacing them. If those guys could keep planes in the air, then these replacements should be able to figure out how to make good calls in a game.

Bottom line, the NFLRA took a hit last night. You can be sure that they they are hoping for some high profile screw-ups on Sunday and Monday to get the NFL back to the bargaining table.

Ya, it is funny how I only remembered most of the old refs based on how they probably ripped off the Cards in some way or another.

I KNOW from Sports Radio, this morning, that people were talking about the game and not about the refs, so they must have done okay. If Sunday's games go as well I would guess the refs union be back negotiating next week. And who knows, some of the people who are saying that replacements were awful, might have friends or relatives who are real refs. I do think that to the untrained eye, they did a decent job.

I don't think it even matters if there are multiple problems with the replacement refs. America is not going to stop watching the NFL, and the replacement refs will only get better. Also, in the court of public opinion, it's tough for joe-sixpack to get behind these guys as they're already making six figures in their M-F job, and now the six they earn reffing a GAME isn't enough. F those guys. Have fun on your private golf courses on Sundays this fall, fellas.

Jim Core, the head ref last night, taught at my Jr High school. Don't remember if I had him for class or not (8th grade is a black hole in my memory, terrible year) but I definitely remembered him when I saw him on TV from seeing him around campus.

I think after last nights game the Refs are going to have to cave on their demands or lose their jobs permanently. Much like the Air Controllers did. There are not many of us that cannot be replaced. You do not need to graduate from MIT or Harvard to be a ref. I sympathize with the Refs and hope they come back but they just do not hold the cards to win this. One of the Refs is from my town and I know him. Walt Coleman who you can recognize easily by his southern accent. He is a wealthy man anyway and money is of no concern. He does it mostly because he enjoys being a ref. My bet he would come back before losing his job as he does this for fun and not for money. He owns with his family the largest dairy in the state and his family has owned it for over 100 years. A good citizen for our city and state. He gives back.

the regular refs are bad enough that I'd be happy with a complete replacement, even if it comes with a learning curve...

Refs re more fair now- One of the pregames were whining because of the lack of history with the current officials. How they had 20 year relationships with strike officials and knew their family and how they tended to call a game!

I say good - the rules are the same NFL wide- they shouldn't be known for the way " they call a game" Officials gain popularity for being known by certain players on the certain 5 teams that have a slobbering love affair with ESPN and the NFLN.

Now if they could just divorce the networks from their marriage with the East Coast Bias - all would be right ith the world.

Regular refs are loadin their drawls right now since these replacement refs arent terrible.


Replacement refs arent great, but they arent bad. Theyll only get better with time.

Why do guys who only work once a week for 21 weeks a year need a union?

It's not like they have to call 162 games like MLB umpires or know how to skate backwards while dodging pucks and refereeing boxing matches like NHL Refs.

it's a high-profile job in a line of work where everybody else has representatives. They don't need the union, the union say an opportunity to get involved and jumped on it. Seems the NFL is realizing that they don't need the union

Two blown calls on the refs now for our game. Fumble should not of been called that on the field. Plus the obviously not a PI call. Whoops and a 3rd, a backwards pass called an incomplete.
