The Indianapolis Colts are one of a few teams that have already hosted Louisville quarterback Tyler Shough on a pre-draft visit, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.
Schefter would also mention that Shough is visiting with Cleveland and the New York Giants this week, and along with already visiting with the Colts, he's also visited with Las Vegas and Seattle.
Each draft cycle, every team is able to have up to 30 prospects in for visits at the team facility. It's an opportunity for teams to do medical checks if needed, walk through film, and get to know the player.
The 2024 season was Shough's first at Louisville. Before that, he spent three seasons at Texas Tech and two at Oregon. In that five-season stretch from 2019 through 2023, Shough appeared in 30 games, completing 63% of his passes at 8.2 yards per attempt with 36 touchdowns to 17 interceptions.
In this most recent season with Louisville, Shough appeared in 12 games as a starter and had 391 pass attempts, by far the most he's had in any year. Shough would complete 62% of those throws at 8.2 yards per attempt with 23 touchdowns and six interceptions.
For more on Shough, here is what Lance Zierlein of NFL.com wrote in his pre-draft scouting report:
"Pocket passer with a seven-year college career prompted by three consecutive years of injuries while at Texas Tech. Shough will turn 26 in September, was in the same recruiting class as Trevor Lawrence and backed up Justin Herbert at Oregon. He’s a talented passer with a live arm who is capable of making pro throws both intermediate and deep but battles inconsistency. He plays with good field vision, using his eyes to hold defenders and set up his throwing windows. Shough is confident and accurate when protected, but will flinch when pressure mounts, leading to spotty decision-making and big sacks."
The Colts are doing a bit of homework on this year's potential mid to late-round draft picks at the quarterback position. They've also had in Texas' Quinn Ewers for an official 30-visit as well.
Bringing in competition for the potential third quarterback spot on the 53-man roster with Jason Bean would be a prudent move to make, particularly at the game's most important position.
But in addition to that, the Colts' quarterback uncertainty very well could spill over into the 2026 offseason, depending on what happens this year with Daniel Jones and Anthony Richardson. So further investing in the position with a developmental prospect certainly isn't a bad idea.
If the Colts do make a Day 3 pick at quarterback, while they shouldn't assume that player will become anything more than a potential backup, it also doesn't hurt to have another option on the roster with the unknowns that could lie ahead.
