Report: USC interviews Lovie Smith

Smith has interviewed with USC for its head coaching position, according to Jason La Canfora of CBS. According to La Canfora, USC is also very interested in former Raiders and Buccaneers head coach Jon Gruden, but that interest is apparently not reciprocated. University of Washington head coach Steve Sarkisian, a former USC assistant, is also believed to be a candidate for the job.

Now Lovie is denying it.

Lovie Smith says he didn’t interview with USC and isn’t interested

The report that Lovie Smith interviewed for the USC head coaching job is being denied by Lovie Smith.

Smith told Jay Glazer of FOX Sports that he was taken aback by the report that he interviewed for the USC job. Smith told Glazer that he absolutely did not interview with USC and has zero interest in the job.

That directly contradicts a report from Jason La Canfora of CBS, who reported that Smith interviewed for the position.

They're targeting Sumlin and Peterson then going from there. Everything that comes out before now and then is just BS. Hard to control the rumors in LA.

Cody Kessler passed for 288 yards as the revitalized Trojans (8-3, 5-2 Pac-12) earned their fifth win in six games under the irrepressible Ed Orgeron, who replaced the fired Lane Kiffin in late September. Orgeron immediately returned fun to a dour program -- and wins have followed, none bigger than this streak-snapping win over powerful Stanford.
They might want to keep Ed Orgeron.

USC to hire Sarkisian
December 2, 2013 2:12 pm ET

Steve Sarkisian will be named the next coach at USC, a source told CBSSports.com Monday morning.

The 39-year-old Sarkisian, a Torrance, California native, spent five seasons at Washington and led the Huskies to a 34-29 record after taking over a program that went 0-12 in 2008. He led UW to an 8-4 record this season behind an O that ranks eighth in the nation in total offense. Washington finished the regular-season by winning four of its final five games...

After the Kiffin debacle, and the NCAA probation one would think that USC would want to disassociate itself from anything to do with Pete Carroll and that era. Kiffin and Sarkisian were both Carroll's coordinators.
