The problem they have here is both Baker and Thompson are Strong safeties. Neither is going to fill the free safety position. With Baker solidified as the starting SS, Thompson has no real position other than to continue to struggle as a FS who can't cover. Hopefully they can work out a trade for Thompson and get something in return instead of an outright cut.
Thomson is a good free safety and more than adequate in coverage. This is a bad take.

Agree that Thompson is adequate in coverage, just not special. Very good tackler and good in run support. Overall, he's a better than average starter at safety. I think the Cardinals will keep him this year while DTD continues to develop, and then not resign him after next season.

I think that's going to be the result, also. He's not Earl Thomas, but you can win with him. I think if and when we put a pass rush in front of him we'll get better results. He suffered because his job was covering up for poor/inconsistent play at the corner position.

There is a world where you have a solid roster and you need to cut or trade Thompson because of cap savings. I don't believe the Cardinals are currently at that point where they need to cut him. I could see a trade if they wanted to swap him with a similar type player on another team at a position the Cardinals need to fill. Not sure who or what that actually looks like,

Well stated. Wouldn't it be nice, heading into year THREE of a plodding rebuild, to even be able to say we have a roster approaching solid, let alone a solid roster?

I do think the roster is approaching solid. Injuries and some obvious misses have hurt the process (but in some ways, that should be expected). In some ways, the fact the Cardinals have few expensive contracts and finished with 8 wins is a credit to Monti. But the lack of top end talent across the roster is a problem, and some key position groups are still in flux. It's just tough to justify cost-cutting moves right now because there is no real need to cut costs until something changes.

So the best type of move the Cardinals could likely do is trade Jalen Thompson for an expensive OG or ILB. An example of a move like this could be a trade for Cleveland guard Joel Bitonio. He is expensive, old, and on an expiring deal. Jalen is younger but would only cost 8 mil on the trade and allow the Browns to cut Thornhill and free up 4 mil in salary this year. I am not saying either team would be interested, but this is the kind of scenario that makes sense for the Cardinals to move off of Jalen.
