Reports: Cardinals sign rookie QB Phillip Sims

Sims (6-4, 210) began his collegiate career with Alabama (2010-2011) before transferring to Virginia for the 2012 season. However, he departed for Winston-Salem State after being ruled academically ineligible in 2013. Sims completed 118-of-198 passes for 1,560 yards with 15 touchdowns and four interceptions in 2014.

I saw the rookies working out and kept saying who the hell is number 1 throwing the ball because he was not on the roster. It is like this, I have looked this kid up and even with limited time search, have a better impression of him succeeding than Logan Thomas or the Harnish guy in the third QB spot because frankly... the guy appears to be far more accurate throwing a football lol

If I was young college QB looking to get a foot in the door in the NFL, AZ would be on my short list

Sims getting some good praise from BA

Arians was impressed with how quickly Sims learned the offense last week, and thinks he can compete with Logan Thomas and Chandler Harnish for the No. 3 job behind Carson Palmer and Drew Stanton.

Sims, who transferred from Alabama to Virginia to Winston-Salem, has had practice in learning new schemes.

"He had no problem listening to (the play) and calling it without it being repeated to him two or three times," Arians said. "Most rookies, they'll get the shift and maybe the formation, then they will turn their head around and ask for the play (again) and everything else.

"He was able to get it. His reads were correct. He actually changed a protection once and I was like, 'Whoa, you're up to level five already. These guys can't do that.' And he was very accurate. He got my attention. He's in the mix."

Here is a link for some highlights. At least I think it is him. Looks like he has some zip, but also lofts the ball when appropriate. He does a good job looking off defenders and moving to secondary receivers. He also has a knack for throwing it where a receiver should go rather than where he is going or where he is. If the receiver follows the ball he ends up in a better spot to receive.

The center is terrible. Out of the shotgun he has to snag the snap all over the place. His ability to stay focused while catching those bad snaps is admirable.

The pass at the 1:56 mark is a 57 yard pass while on the run right to left.

Interesting. He's an UFA so its all gravy, but he seems to have some smarts and talent.

thank u JCSunsfan and also for your analysis.
in this video even if it is a low level of competition the guy show some skills.
he can throw the football with accuracy,make throws in the pocket and while scrambling,has great field vision nd he is not just focused in one receiver...is far better then logan thomas..
hope to see also K9 and mitch comment about this video

I agree with you...he looks off the safety like a pro. Has a good, tall presence in the pocket, good feet and excellent patience. His mobility is a plus. The only slight negative I saw was that he tries to steer the ball a little too much, rather than just snapping it off. At that level of competition, he could get away with steering the ball because the DBs don't have NFL recovery speed, but in the NFL he is going to have to show a snappier release, increased RPMs and the ability to rope the ball into tighter windows. Might take a little getting used to, but this kid has real upside if he does.

He sounds promising. You never know. Warner went undrafted & Brady wasn't drafted until the 6th rd so anybody can surprise & be better than projected. Personally I hope he makes it. The 3 main attributes you want in a QB is accuracy, intelligence, & the ability to process information quickly. By all accounts he has everyone of those.

I'm certainly not a quarterback expert but Sims is not going to be able to loft some of those deep passes in the NFL like he did in the video. Maybe more coaching could resolve the issue. I'm not looking forward to LT as the third string QB.

There are certainly a couple of those passes that he should not have thrown. It looks like at least one of those was an end of game hail mary. When a hail mary works out, its a really exciting memory for a football team, but its not a good look on a QB's resume.
