Antonio McDyess scored eight points and had four rebounds in a 16-minute appearance on Thursday night against the New York Knicks. For most of McDyess' career, that represented a decent first half.
But after breaking his left patella and having surgery that caused him to miss all of last season, then having to undergo a second bone-graft surgery on his patella last April, it represented a lot. He ran the floor, even jumped, without dragging his leg or limping. And he did it again at Thursday's morning practice.
"I feel good about myself again and I'm more motivated and encouraged," he said. "I was having problems and now things are moving along. It seems like there is a light at the end of the tunnel."
Upon obtaining McDyess on Jan. 5, the Suns played him in five games and placed him on the injured list for 15 games to concentrate on an intense rehab routine designed to strengthen the knee and, especially, the quadriceps muscles above it.
"I've really come along well since I've been here," said McDyess who missed the first 17 games of the season while rehabbing with the Knicks. "The difference between programs here and New York has been night and day. It's a totally different program than the one the Knicks had me on.
"It's a lot more hands on here. A lot more work on things I need. I didn't have my range of motion when I got here. The trainers and strength coach have done a terrific job with me. My leg is so much stronger now."
He's still a work in progress, underscored by the fact that the training staff pulled him from Thursday's rehab regimen on the knee.
"Guys are telling me I look good," McDyess said. "Even my former teammates on the Knicks told me that during the game. That's encouraging and makes me feel good about myself."
Marion questionable
Shawn Marion sat out practice after reinjuring his ankle vs. New York and is questionable for tonight in Seattle.
"I think we'll have Shawn," coach Mike D'Antoni said. "He said it felt pretty good this morning. We'll see how he is when he wakes up in the morning goes through the shootaround. But he has a good chance of going."
