Started watching it - got thru the extended scene with Saruman at Orthanc.

Makes MUCH more sense now - never should have been cut.

Also shows WHY the scouring of the Shire is not in the film.

If anyone wants me to post details, let me know.

Of course, I got the Extended Edition Gift Set yesterday at the studio lot, so I put a lot of mileage on the ole credit card:

LOTR: ROTK EE Gift Set
Looney Tunes: Vol 2
Harry Potter 3
Gone With the Wind (4 disc)
Friends Season 8
Buster Keaton Collection
Elf

Will probably get Matrix very soon as well...

Because, and he was quoted as saying this, Peter Jackson never liked the scouring, so he never filmed it.

I understand that part - but the cut scene ties up a few loose ends regarding the Scouring.

When the four hobbits return from Minas Tirith to the Shire, it's been overrun by evil men ( I think men, or orcs, who knows...evil hobbits too)...and the four hobbits having been through what they have been, basically get a group of good guys together and get rid of all the evil from the shire.

Pretty cool...it's amazing to see the transformation that they go through during the book...they leave all timid and happy, and come back like warriors and kick some tail...

That's like, the only thing missing from LOTR!

Except when they're that size they're called wittle wightsabers.

On another note, about the developed coolness of the hobbits. I hear that the extended version shows Merry pledging to Theoden. I want to see that.

Started watching some of the extra's on Disc 3, but I have to stop and wait until I watch the entire extended movie...they start talking about these added scenes and I want to watch them first.

Some great final stuff on Tolkein though, where he got his inspiration, what a lot of it means, the languages, etc.

These DVD's have to be some best ever made...the mini-documentaries are facinating...

I wasn't all that impressed with a lot of the bonus footage.

SPOILERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The mouth of Sauron came off pretty lame to me. As did the brief Gandalf/Witch King scene.

I liked the Paths of the Dead add ins, but I can totally see why it was cut - you basically have the same beat playing twice if you leave in the Army of the Dead surpirsing the guys getting onto the boats and then surprising the Armies of Sauron getting off the boats. You want to have one of thsoe moments in the movie, otherwise it just seems repetitive.

There was a great scene with Faromir and Denethor in there and their reltionship was strenghtened in the extras as was the houses of the healing stuff between Eowyn and Faramir - but to be honest, I dug the cut version more - it was just more streamlined and more of a movie than a novel on screen.

OH - and Saruman's death scene just seemed bad and long for my tastes. Was it weird seeing the movie without it - yeah - but it totaly bogged down the pacing for my tastes and didn't even seemed to be as well shot/acted as the rest of the movie.

See, Saruman's death scene is drastically different in the movie...in the book, it was an ironic period at the end of the scouring of the shire...Wormtongue ended up stabbing him in the back and fleeing. No idea yet what they're doing with it in the extended version, but probably different.

I just wish you could enjoy the movies Stout...

Even Tolkein himself said the books would never make good movies the way they were written.

What I like when I watch the Documentaries on how they adapt things from the book to the screen, they explain WHY they did it.

And I think it's pretty cool how they kept important things from the books, but maybe put them in a different place, just because it was an important quote.

In the book, at the end when Frodo is on the boat, and is approaching the undying lands, he says

"the grey rain-curtain turned all to silver glass...white shores...far green country...under a swift sunrise..."

Might not fit at the end, but they have Gandalf say it to Pippen in Minas Tirith when he talks about not being afraid of death.

See, that just shows me how faithful Jackson and his writers were to trying to keep the theme of the book there, but did it despite changing things.

I just love them!

As proven with the cartoon versions that came out while Tolkein was still alive. Those were awful

Um, gee Miike, I wasn't ripping on the movie in the slightest with my last statement...just giving the difference. I'm thrilled Saruman's fall will be in the movie, and look forward to seeing how it's staged, actually.

I, too, love how things are managed to fit, even in the wrong places. Fellowship did this perfectly. I mean, I didn't have a single complaint coming out of Fellowship. ROTK did a very good job as well, but not quite as good. Some things were changed that, even movie-wise, would have been better in a different way. Much in TT was done wrong, flat-out wrong.

Still, I have the movie, love it, and watch it too. I'll have ROTK soon, and I'll cherish all of them. You may feel free to get off my back now, Mr. Overreaction ;)

Sorry, lol...I always felt like you never really enjoyed them...but I've been mistaken!

Glad you love them, like I do. I swear...I watch them and get so emotionally attached to the characters...to Theoden's charge and death scene...to Samwise picking Frodo up and carrying him...etc.

Anyways, I'm glad you love them too, and only wish you lived out here so you could join Fischer and me for our Marathon of the Rings on the 28th :)

Consider me off your back

Groovy! I still do love them, and there are parts that just make me want to take the bastard sword down off my wall, charge into the street, and start running around screaming...but I sit and watch instead ;)

My main beefs are with the second movies, though...I just thought there were some really stupid, stupid decisions made...and I've watched the commentary, heard the reasons, and find them idiotic. Still, we needed the middle film, and it's fun, taken out of context.

Okay...finished it today after starting it last night.

I just have to say, it rocks.

*****Spoilers below******

Tons of added stuff obviously...some of my favorites are the Witch King blowing up Gandalf's staff...more stuff with Faramir and Denothor, a great scene with Faramir and Pippen...

Another great one was Frodo and Sam walking by the old king statue at the crossroads, and seeing the head covered in flowers, and light shining down on it...was great.

More with Merry and Eowyn on the way to Minas Tirith, and more of them fighting on the fields...actually get to see Merry whoop some butt...and Eowyn kick some tail as well.

Lots of things in the extras have to do with things in the original. Like at the end, when Pippen finds Merry on the fields...he says "No, I'm going to look after YOU..."

That comes from a scene when Pip rides off with Gandalf from Edoras...Merry says "I've always looked after him" or something like that.

PLUS, they put in the part when Frodo and Sam get yanked into the marching Orcs in Mordor and have to find their escape...pretty cool that that was in there.

Anyways, I could go on and on...it rocked, and these movies are just perfect to me.
