My morning newspaper had a front page story on Crime stats for 2002. There were under 600 murders in Canada that year. The largest percentage with knives... and slightly less than 30% with guns. This overall number is a bit high for us (we usually average about 500 per year) - but, it jumped with the arrest of a serial killer in the Vancover area (15 prostitutes confirmed as murdered... and perhaps up to 40) and ongoing drug related biker wars in Quebec and Ontario).

The last time I took note, Detroit (a bridge away) alone had more murders than all of Canada.

Those numbers are very misleading when you take into account that the United States has a population of over 290 million and Canada has a population of around 31 million.

If he really does have WebTV the problem is probably the wireless keyboard. I have it and have been too lazy to get a real computer at home. They have a huge problem with virtually all the wireless keyboards in the first 2 generations of the product. With mine it just stops working and you have to spend 5 minutes adjusting the battery until it works again, the way the battery fits in it just gets "loose" and then no power.

They fixed that on the 2nd generation but they have some fatal flaw with that too, I'm told one of the more recent system wide upgrades the 2nd generation keyboards lost roughly 1/3 of their functions, just didn't work with the new software.

I know a few people who work for WebTV, since the Borg bought them I think things have gone downhill.

It was "neat" when I bought it but it's way too slow now, my biggest problem now is that despite a recent software upgrade, they still don't work with the players that you can use to listen to NFL games on the net. They used to back in 98 and 99 but the newer net players don't work on WebTV.

But I digress as usual.

There is no desire to mislead (or in fact argue in any way).

If you'd care to compare the murder stats between, let's say - California and Canada, which have relatively the same population... then perhaps we'd have a number worth comparing.

That said; we both know that are many major metropolitan areas in the States that alone have more murders than all of Canada.

For example, I live in a city of 1-million - and we had 8 murders last year. Toronto with a population of over 3 million had just over 60 - anf Montreal with a 2-million population had just over 50.

The US has relatively 10 times the population of Canada. So, to consider things equally, the US should have no more than 10 times our number of murders... (10 x 600) = 6000

You and me, could only wish that your numbers were that positive.

This will divert things completely off topic, but when I left the Pacific Northwest (1996), the Green River Killer was still at large. Any connection made between that and the Vancouver (BC) serial killer you speak of?

No link in the stories I read, and the cops on both sides of the border checked that out. The guy arrested in Vancouver is a millionaire property owner who had a pig farm just outside city limits, where the bodies were found.

In 1999, Canada had 1.8 murders per 100,000 population while the U.S. had roughly three times the murders at 5.7 per 100,000.

Still significant, but nowhere near as dire as you make it out.
