I am feeling especially good today about what the Cardinals did in New York the past three days.

I am so thrilled that the Cardinals actually worked the draft in ways we have never ever seen before. I equate this to blitzing Aaron Rodgers on 3rd and 7, rather than rushing three and playing soft zone. We all know how that one worked out!

In short, our Cardinals "got after it" big-time!

The upsides of these draftees...

1. Dan Williams, NT. Not only does he have the strength to command and anchor the middle of the defense, this kid has legitimate pass rush ability and is a fast, quick closer on the QB. Imagining the trio of Docket, Williams and Campbell teeing off up that middle every play is pure joy. And our backup trio of Iwebema, Watson and Branch ain't too shabby either.

2. Daryl Washington, WILB. The more I think about it, the more I realize how special this player is for what the Cardinals want in their WILB. They want their "best athlete" to play there...and what I've come to realize is, because the Cardinals do a good job up front of keeping their WILB free, what they want more than anything else is a fast rangy athlete who is proficient at getting to the ball as quickly as possible and equally proficient at angle tackling. These two things are what Washington does best and better than any LB in that draft. Once he settles in, because he is faster than Dansby and a little more explosive in finishing off angle tackles, I think his numbers will exceed Dansby's. Where Washington will have to improve the most is in coverage, where he has the speed and athleticism to match up one on one with RBs...but will need to develop the proper techniques and ball skills that Dansby absolutely excells at. Because Washington reacts so quickly to plays in front of him, I think he will already be better at blowing up screens and WR hitch passes and screens to his side, which was one of Dansby's biggest shortcomings. In essence, in Washington, we have the freak athlete at the position the Cardinals want.

3. Andre Roberts, WR. May have the best hands of any WR in the draft, and this is especially important now that passes may not be as consistently on the money each time when Warner was throwing them. Plus, we lost our best YAC WR, and this kid has tremendous YAC ability. In addition, it was clear the past two years that Steve Breaston lost a little of his passion for punt returns. What Roberts gives us is a legitimate home run threat as a punt returner...and, when needed, Breaston should feel extra happy and motivated to jump in there on occasional punt returns when the situation dictates it. In other words, this takes the pressure off Stevie, who is now our #2 WR!

4. O'Brien Schofield, OLB. To me this pick made the draft...I was totally bummed out we missed the opportunity to draft OLB Jerry Hughes and QB Mike Kafka. When the Eagles snatched Kafka right in front of us at #122, and it was clear the Cardinals were planning to select Kafka at #123...what transpired from that point on was magical. Immediately the Cardinals traded out of the #123 spot to add the extra pick which enabled them not only to draft Schofield, but then give them the extra felxibility to swing the trade with Pittsburgh that landed John Skelton. To me this was akin to getting burned deep for a TD and answering right back with a 12 play 80 yard TD drive. The thing is...Schofield, when he gets healthy, is a better fit for our defense than Hughesm because he's a better all-around player. I think Hughes would have just been a sitautional pass rusher for us, and I would have been fine with that, because he's so good at rushing the passer. But, Schofield is such a versatile athlete that he will be a three down player at OLB for the Cardinals...and we will have just as furious a pass rush with him coming off the edge.

5. John Skelton, QB. Was it just me or did you find it rather amazing and serendipitous that shortly after making the trade to select Skelton, ESPN shows a special on him, and Skelton could not have been more impressive in those bright lights under laboratory conditions. (Satruday Night Live joke: "What the leading cause of high blood pressure in laboratory mice? Exposure to laboratory tests!") As much as I was enamored with Mike Kafka's outstanding comeptitiveness and aggressive style, Skelton has far better size and skills. Skelton has protoypical size, superior arm strength and equal mobility. Then to learn that as much as the Cardinals liked Kafka, they covered their bases 10 days before the draft by sending Chris Miller and Mike Miller to NY to meet with Skelton and work him out. This is GREAT work on the Cardinals' part, and what's even greater work is what they did---in the aftermath of getting edged out for Kafka---and having no fifth round pick---they pulled a rabbit out of the hat to move up to get this kid. I have been saying ever since that day after the season there was no way the Cardinals were going to pay BMF $5M this season. They probably were just going to release him anyway. We got the best arm in the draft and we had to be extremely creative to get him, and we regained a cool $5M. Plus, I love that we just added the most accurate passer in the draft in Max Hall, who I think will eventually be a perfect #3 and possible #2 QB for the Cardinals for years to come. And he's from Mesa! When is his birthday, Brian?

6. Jorrick Calvin, CB. Talk about combing the grass for prospects. It's amazing to me how widespread the Cardinals scouting ranges. I think the Cardinals have become the best small school gold miners of the NFL. The reason why the Cardinals took this kid instead of Donovan Warren? He's faster and he can play press. It's that simple. Same reason why BMF is no longer a Cardinal---that and the $5M.

7. Jim Dray, TE. To think of what this guy has been through to get drafted is an amazing story. He shattered his knee and he was back playing eight months later. He even admitted that he had to just concentrate on blocking upon his return because his knee wasn't ready to run double moves. We are becoming a smashmouth offense and this guy is our next Anthony Becht. Dray's determination and character are remarkable. And that knee gets better and stronger every day. While I think he's probably going to spend a year on the PS, because of his determination and character, I wouldn't be at all surprised if he makes the team as the #3 TE.

I will leave you with this thought...the 49ers are a thing of the past. The Cardinals are the 10ers!

Always enjoy your posts, Mitch...

and, like you, I''m feeling pretty good about things.:) While everyone else has already written our obituary, we're quietly going about our business. While this years' team will have a different look, we have something that I think is being over-looked. We've gotten a taste of winning. ...And we're hungry for more. So, while the same "experts" that predicted we'd never get past the Falcons, Panthers, Eagles, or even Packers last year, are predicting doom & gloom..... I'm just not buyin'. GO CARDS! :D

Good Stuff Mitch. I pretty much agree with you on everything. I think the Schofield pic is going to turn out to be a great one. At first, I was disapointed we used our 3rd rd pick to move up to get Washington but then I learning that they were thinking about taking him in the first if Williams didn't fall. If they had that high of a grade on him then I'm okay wiith the trade up. In fact, I think that may have been their plan all along.

Agree on almost all levels. Especially on Daryl Washington. So many on here have been trashing him because of his size. His size is not much of an issue when considering that his primary job will be pass coverage. He won't be taking on blockers often. His job is to roam the field and disrupt passes. Size is way down on the list of importance for that goal.

As much as I like Williams, Washington, and Roberts, I think Schofield has a chance to be the best player out of this draft.

Someone brought up how excited we all were about Lance Mitchell the other day so that tempers my excitement a bit, but everything else I have read about this kid is A+ and I am excited to see what he does once he has had a full year to recover. Our OLB corp seems to be set for years with Davis, Brown, and Schofield.

Hey NDSF...stout defense with a prolific pass rush and a smashmouth offense...I think that got the Jets to the AFC Championship with a mere rookie at QB. I am loving this and I sense you are too!

What makes you think it is so obvious we wanted Kafka? I might have missed some information that leaked or something, but I've read a couple times now from you that it was apparent we were targetting Kafka and was just wondering what the source is on that.

I know bg7brd that you wanted Weatherspoon, and I don't blame you in the least, after all he was taken well before we picked, making it a mooot point...and I wanted Hughes so badly, like you with Spoon...but guess what, the combo of Williams and Washington is better than you or I could have devised, as it turns out. But I love your passion, bg7brd. Don't ever change.

After all the years of frustration, the wait was well worth it. We've gone from one of the dumbest to one of the smartest NFL teams. Who'd a thunk it?

I saw Somers say this twice, but Urban made reference to Skelton being the "only" mid round QB the Cards considered.

Its funny because when it comes to the QB takes/viewpoints on this team, it seems Somers and Urban are in completely different realms. It makes me think Somers is in good with some one like Mike or Chris Miller and Urbans getting his info from a different source. Not sure what to believe in that respect.

We need to get deeper at CB and ILB, and OL and TE.. But we are well on our way to becoming a complete football team if only Matt comes through..

Both Kent Somers and Darren Urban, anks, reported the Cardinals were planning to take Kafka at #123.

Yep, Wiz even stated in his presser that fact. He didn't name the player but you can put two and two together when he was asked the question what made you trade down in the fourth and he says "the player we were targeting got picked right before us". The player selected right before us was Mike Kafka.

Thanks, u mention that Kafka's advantages are his aggressiveness/competitiveness.. sounds like things that might not exactly be lacking in Skelton. He may never become a starter, who knows.. but Skelton seems like the type of guy who hasn't had things come to him easy (had to drive around to different schools giving them tape on his HS accolades) and he is a physical specimen. Sounds like he found his scholarship/starting position and not like he was actively recruited and that to me makes me think he has some of that aggressiveness/competitive nature in him.. and maybe it hasn't been fully developed/focused yet, but if he's got the right mindset, and has the right physical talent.. we may have ourselves a player.

Superb write up Mitch as per usual and I fully agree with every die hard in this very positive thread. It won't all happen overnight but the groundwork has been laid perfectly.

How impressive is every move being made? We'll have to make the "In Whiz We Trust" Game Shirts.Everyone is gonna want one.Boy did the steelers miss out on one hell of a coach.

I don't think the World Championship is ours this year but we are laying groundwork for a defensive scheme that once Washington and Williams,Schofield and whoever Coach Whiz has in mind for Hayes' replacement then we of course pay Dockett & CC for sure as this team is something special like some great teams of the past.

I think Matt can get the job done with the constant challenge from Skelton keeps us a very potent offense for a long time.Only a CB,TE & true Fullback to go with Hayes' replacement.

Watching this come together is very special.

Leading up to the draft one of the biggest complaints on here was that the Cards didn't have all of there needs addressed ahead of time and were forced to draft certain positions early. Well, after drafting the needed NT and WILB they made a bunch of picks that are for the future. We added a pass rushing OLB who should have been a 1st or 2nd round pick. For this year we have Porter and Haggans manning the 2 outside spots with Davis, Brown and Baggs in the mix. We're now in a good position for this year and next year.

We added a WR who many call a steal and could be our next Breaston, which puts the team in a great position when Steve is up for free agency. If we can keep him, great. If not we have Doucet and Rogers in the wings. We could use a few more ILBs but there were only so many draft picks and that is one of the positions that typically has the easiest transition. My final analysis: while this draft might not look that great as far as immediate impact, I think it's one that sets up the team for continued success.

Finest-----I feel the same way. I gave them an A+ for that pick, and even if he can't play at all this year, (which I doubt is the case), he will be like a shiny new penny next year, AND will know the ins and outs of our system and how to condition himself for this game. He will be starter ready I believe by then, and that-----for a 4th round pick. :D

Mitch, your enthusiasm is contagious! I thought the Andre Roberts pick was pure genius. Its a pick that the Cards never would have made 10 years ago, but as you mentioned our scouting department has done such a tremendous job digging for the hidden gems in recent years. I thought the Schofield selection was a great move as well. He is a terror coming off the edge when healthy and probably would have been a late 1st round selection if not for the knee injury.

Gary Patterson, the head coach at TCU, was interviewed on KTAR shortly after the Washington pick. He mentioned that Washington was the best player in coverage on the entire team. He said that includes all the defensive backs. He also mentioned that Washington is the best athlete at linebacker that he has ever seen since he recruited Urlacher.
