So I've been purusing Bengals message boards. I know getting info from "fans" always brings mixed info, but in this case they are unanimous in being glad Rey is gone.

Some tidbits: (This one I saw everywhere), he can't cover a TE to save his life.

He over-pursues and is slow to recognize play action.

He only makes tackles 5 yards past the LOS.

He has a drinking problem.

BUT it appears to be also the consensus that he may pan out in a 3-4 scheme, he just isn't built to be a 4-3 MLB.

Just food for thought.

Sounds like Lenon to me, just like I said. ;)

Thanks Brian. Hopefully this is another case like Jonathon Vilma. Great player.... Wrong scheme requirements.

I do agree about the TE's. I watched Owen Daniels, Heath Miller, & Dennis Pitta torch him a ton.

I have no hope for the Bowles (Parcells & Belicheck) 3-4 until we get a super-dynamic pass rusher. So anything positive that happens will surprise me.

p.s. What a great way to begin the Todd Bowles era by replacing both of your defensive captains from last year!

The drinking would go back to my earlier comment I hope he grew up since college. Rey is the guy who was forced to do anger management at USC to avoid multiple offenses related to fights at on campus parties. Basically he liked to go to parties, get drunk and then beat people up. The DA who tends to get those cases happens to be a USC alum(Carmine something or other) and did a nice job of keeping Rey out of jail when he was at USC and eventually had to put him in court ordered Anger Management classes.

He hasn't really been in much trouble since college so hopefully that's not still a problem but who knows.

Can't find confirmation he signed.

Didn't seem to be a problem with Floyd this year. Much ado about nothing.

I do too. If at the start of the day you told me my choices were Lenon, Foote or Maualuga, I would have picked Rey all day long.

May be....but again how will he fit in a different style defense.

The Bengal fans I've talked to say he is slower than slow......didn't watch enough Bungle games to tell ya one way or another.

Can we do better than him in the draft?

I guess that's the question.

We could do worse than signing Rey Maualuga to play SILB, but again it comes down to price. How much do you pay a guy who is a liability in coverage on 3rd downs. You end up either limiting him to base schemes or becoming predictable in nickel packages because teams know he can't drop into coverage. Also, how much is a slow SILB in a division with athletic QBs like Wilson and Kaepernick worth? Keep in mind this is money that is then taken away from signing a CB, RB, QB, and OLB.

I think Maualuga is better than he showed last year. He isn't great, but he would be a fairly significant upgrade over Lenon and Reggie Walker.

Maualuga >>>>>>> Lenon

1. He is better suited as a 3-4 SILB than a 4-3 MLB imo
2. He's only 26
3. He isn't going to command a lot of money.

GET HIM! :newcards:

a cynic would suggest the same type of maturity and personality issues that leads to those problems, would contribute to how a player prepares for games.

Or less politely, maybe the reason Floyd spent the whole year lining up incorrectly and running the wrong routes is somehow connected to his level of maturity?

I didn't read through this whole thread but this is a good move if they can get him. He's a young player that fills a need and has good upside. The type of guy the Cards should be looking at signing.

Yeah if the money is right and we did our homework I like rey.

I had him on my guys we should draft when he slips the year he came out in the draft. I was openly predicting he would slip because as I said at the time,he had an extensive history running with gangs when he was a minor, its why his family sent him to live away from home to get him away from his friends who were all in a Samoan gang. Because he was a minor, that stuff was all sealed.

But anybody who follows the draft knows that somehow NFL teams seem to get reports of juvenile records that are supposed to be sealed. That's why Corey Dillon slipped years ago and it's happened several times, it apparently happened with Rey too. You can hear a kid ran with a gang, but when you see on paper what he did as a juvenile, it tends to stick out more.

He's been pretty well behaved in the NFL IIRC so hopefully that stuff is behind him. Again not a great player but good, if the money is right.

For what it's worth, Daniel Jerimiah would like Maualuga in AZ:

@MoveTheSticks:
@mikejurecki Maualuga would be a perfect compliment to D. Washington. He's a downhill missile and Washington can cleanup after him.

With Jasper Brinkley on his way to Arizona, Rey Maualuga will be leaving without a deal. Out of there tonight.

I wonder if they know something about Jasper and want him more.
