The 2024-25 girls' basketball season for the South Bend area will be remembered as an eventful one.
Although no teams made it to the state championship game, one team from each side of the state line ― Marquette Catholic in Indiana, and Brandywine in Michigan ― reached the final four of their respective tournaments. Marquette made the IHSAA Class 1A semi-state championship game, while Brandywine was in the Division 3 MHSAA state semifinals. Different labels, but the same point for each respective state tournament.
Marquette was joined by South Bend Washington (4A), Bremen (2A), and Elkhart Christian Academy (1A) as area IHSAA sectional winners. Edwardsburg claimed an MHSAA Division 2 district crown as well. Elkhart Christian added its first-ever regional championship, while Washington, Bremen, and Edwardsburg saw strong seasons end at the regional round.

Through it all, records were set and several accolades were achieved. One player and one coach stood above the others, though, which has earned them special recognition by the Tribune.
Washington senior Kira Reynolds is the 2024-25 South Bend Tribune Girls Basketball Player of the Year, while Brandywine’s Josh Hood is the Coach of the Year.
Hood guided the Bobcats to a 27-1 record, their only defeat coming in the state semifinals to Ypsilanti Arbor Prep. Brandywine dominated its competition despite a strong schedule, winning all-but one of its games by double digits. They knocked off 10 different conference champions during its run to the final four of Division 3.
This is the second straight season Reynolds has earned this honor from the Tribune. Along with her tremendous per-game averages (14.8 points, 13.4 rebounds, 6.5 blocks, 6 assists, and 3.5 steals), Reynolds made history on two occasions. She became the state’s all-time blocks leader, finishing with 593. She also recorded a quintuple-double in a game ― 14 points, 18 rebounds, 12 assists, 11 steals, and 10 blocks ― on Jan. 4 against New Prairie.
The Panthers finished with a 24-2 record, winning a fifth consecutive sectional title before losing to Warsaw in a 4A regional contest. Warsaw went on to finish as state runner-up.
Reynolds is joined by teammates Monique Mitchell and Ryiah Wilson, along with Penn senior Jessa Troy and Northridge senior Rielyn Goodwin, on the Tribune’s All-Area first team. Reynolds and Mitchell were Senior “Supreme 15” selections by the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association, while Wilson, Troy, and Goodwin were all Senior All-State honorees.
All 20 players that were nominated for our Player of the Year fan poll last week made our All-Area team, split into four teams. The Tribune staff decided which players made each team.
