It’s the most wonderful time of the year.

Sure, the Andy Williams classic is meant for Christmas, but I’m bringing it to this time of year.

We’ve dug ourselves out of the snow (maybe not yet if you’re looking at Saturday) and it’s time to look at hanging up the winter jacket and snow shovel.

Baseball is back! and I’m beyond excited for it.

Yesterday, as I wrote this article, the Yankees and Brewers were on the screen next to me. By now you know I’m not a Yankees fan at all, but it’s baseball.

I just love the sound of the crack of the bat, the look of the field, the cleats walking in dugouts and gloves popping as they catch the ball.

What’s not to love about, “America’s Pastime”?

It’s why I’m drawn to the baseball diamond so much.

I’m seriously considering going to the Plattsburgh High baseball scrimmage today against South Burlington just to enjoy the game.

With the start of the MLB regular season, everyone has the hope that it’s their year. Sure, the White Sox suck and it looks like it’s the Dodgers’ World Series to lose, but there’s 162 games to go.

There are so many stories that will be told over the next months, that come October, players — and teams — that will develop and it will be something to see.

And it’s not just the MLB but the high schools and Plattsburgh State are digging out of the snow and getting ready for their time to shine.

The Cardinals’ baseball and softball teams recently returned from trips to Florida, and soon host games at their respective fields. Both lacrosse teams are going and have had a couple of games at home.

The high schools, however, don’t start official games until Tuesday. That’s when Johnsburg/Minerva opens the softball season against Warrensburg.

There’s also this little thing that I’m thinking some people might not know of its growth and popularity: flag football kicks off with games at Moriah and Plattsburgh High.

From the MLB to college and to high school, the beginning of the season is always the best. Expectations are high and hope springs eternal.

Maybe it’s because the winter is (soon) over. Maybe it’s just the excitement similar to seeing an old friend, the nostalgia and the simplicity of it.

In my opinion, Opening Day should be a national holiday! Yeah, that’s some bias because baseball was my first love.

T-ball, Little League, Senior League, high school baseball. It’s been something that I’ve enjoyed and still enjoy to this day.

Someone once asked me how someone from North Carolina can be a Red Sox fan. That might be another column that only a handful of people would enjoy, maybe.

I say that because I’ve met a lot of people who are Yankees fans, and some Mets fans too. Can even think of someone who calls the Orioles his team. There’s also some that even reminisce about the days of the Expos.

The snow will soon be gone and I’ll be in the crazy world of sports coverage.

But, I’ll have baseball to help me get through it, and carry me through to slow down in the Summer.

It truly is a wonderful time.
