Even if Chandler plays out his contract this year with the Suns, I think he could be a valuable mentor for Ayton. He doesn't bring much to the table on the floor any more but I believe he's a great locker room presence with so many young players. Plus he's kind of an enforcer type and if you watch all of Bookers scuffles last year Chandler and JJ were always the first to his side. That's got to have value to a guy we just signed to the max.
I want our players to come to a teammates side when there is an altercation on the floor however I don't think it matters who is first or last to get there. No one is throwing punches or fighting in the NBA. It probably helps build chemistry though when players do get in an altercation and their teammates come to their defense. I would rather not see someone walk the other way like Lonzo Ball did last year when someone on the Lakers got in an altercation with someone. As a rookie, that's not sending the right message to your teammates. Lonzo even commented and said that no one was going to fight and that's why he went the other way. While I understand that is true, no one is actually going to fight, even saying that could send the wrong message to your teammates. Doing and saying that as a rookie or young player is stupid for many reasons. How do they know what the NBA is like? They've watched games but are just starting to play in them and should be saying what does and does not happen. It's also similar to saying their teammate is a chicken, coward, or that they're all talk.
Ultimately, a player's teammates should come to the circle or group that forms and try to separate them. How quickly they get there or who shows up first doesn't matter. That is not worth a roster spot, a starting job, or even extra playing time. It should be second nature to stand up for your teammates, in a reasonable way. No one should be applauded for doing that. It's 2018, the NBA does a good job of keeping fights from happening in general. It's no longer the 70's or 80's, when players would get the snot beat out of each other.
