MANSFIELD — The Richland County Baseball Power Poll curse is real.
This week brings the third different No. 1 team in just four weeks of rankings. Last week's No. 1 went 1-3 for the week. Two weeks ago, the Clear Fork Colts were No. 1 and went 2-2 during their reign.
Hopefully, this week's No. 1 team can break the curse the top spot brings.
HIRED: 'I am a TY-Tyger through and through': Mansfield Senior hires Fletcher as next football coach
The Rams lost five straight since the last power poll and are currently on a six-game skid. They lost to Lexington (7-1), New Philadelphia (6-2), Zanesville twice (8-3 and 12-4) and West Holmes (6-4) in the last week. They do get West Holmes once more before traveling to Shelby on Friday and Vermilion for a doubleheader on Saturday. Next week, they have a road game at Galion before getting Mansfield Senior twice in an OCC series.
The Flames found the win column twice since the last power poll. They beat Vanlue 11-5 and Crestline 8-6 before falling to the Bulldogs in Game 2 of the series 14-2 and dropping one to Buckeye Central 17-1 on Tuesday. Landin McRae had a big day at the plate against Vanlue with two hits and two RBIs, while Blayne Morrow was lights out on the mound with 10 strikeouts in five innings of relief work. The Flames have to be feeling good after their two victories as they head into a Mid-Buckeye Conference series with Central Christian next week.
The Cougars struggled since the last power poll going 1-3 with a 12-2 loss to Colonel Crawford and a 15-1 loss to Clear Fork before getting a much-needed victory over Monroeville 11-3. But, they lost to the Eagles in the second game of the series 8-7 for their fourth one-run loss in Firelands Conference play this season. They get New London twice to round out the week before heading to Northmor on Saturday.
The No. 1 ranking curse hit Lucas in a big way last week as the Cubs went 1-3 since topping the list. The Cubs lost to Plymouth 10-5, Canton McKinley 11-1 and Central Christian 9-7 before rebounding to beat the Comets 7-2 in the second game of the MBC series. Jack DiBartolomeo salvaged the series split with a dominant performance on the mound allowing two unearned runs on one hit with 14 strikeouts. The Cubs travel to Colonel Crawford on Thursday before getting Crestline on Monday where a win would net a share of the league championship.
The Tygers split their two games since the last power poll falling to New Philadelphia 12-0 before beating Crestline 13-6 on Tuesday. Peyton Page had himself a day with three hits and three RBIs against the Bulldogs. The Tygers are coming up on a portion of their schedule that could see them approach 10 wins with Crestline once more, Toledo Rigers on Friday, Sandusky on Monday, a two-game series with Madison on April 29 and 30, a home game with Bucyrus on May 2 and a home game with Mansfield Christian on May 5. Getting to 10 wins would be massive for the Tygers.
The Big Red went 2-1 since the last power poll knocking off last week’s No. 1 team Lucas 10-5 before falling 12-7 in a headscratcher to New London. The Big Red did bounce back in Game 2 against the Wildcats with an 11-0 victory as Jarrett Burrer had two hits and an RBI and earned the win on the mound allowing now runs on no hits with eight strikeouts in four innings of work. Bobby Bowman finished off the combined no-hitter with a perfect fifth inning. The Big Red get Mapleton twice to end the week in two games that could make them series contenders for a Top 2 spot next week.
The Warriors had a tough start since the last power poll but rebounded nicely. They lost to Galion 13-2 and 11-1 but came back to beat Hillsdale 10-9 and Pleasant 9-4. Against Hillsdale, the Warriors overcame seven errors which all lead to nine unearned runs to win it in extra innings. Jaren Holden continues to hit the ball well. He had four hits against the Falcons and a hit and two RBIs against the Spartans. The Warriors have to clean things up defensively and can do it with one more game against Pleasant before heading to Clyde on Saturday.
The Minutemen went 2-1 since the last power poll beating Madison 7-1 and Johnstown-Monroe 9-4. But, a 17-0 loss to Wooster on Tuesday really hurt their Ohio Cardinal Conference championship hopes and their shot at being No. 1 this week. Cole Eichorn had a great game against JM with a hit and three RBIs while Gage Powell tossed a one-hit gem with 10 strikeouts in the win over Madison. Lex has Wooster one more time this week before hosting Highland and traveling to Perkins. Those are three tough games that could get the Minutemen back into the No. 1 conversation or send them out of the Top 5.
The Colts went 3-1 last week with 15-3 and 6-0 wins over Pleasant and a 15-1 win over Crestview, but a 3-1 loss to Marion Harding hit their MOAC championship title hopes pretty hard as they are now two games back in the loss column. Jay Jackson was on a terror last week having three hits and four RBIs against Crestview, three hits and an RBI in Game 2 against Pleasant and five hits and five RBIs in Game 1. If he can keep producing at the plate like that, the Colts should rebound against Harding in Game 2 of the series before heading into a big one next week with Shelby.
The Whippets get the curse of being this week’s No. 1 team in the power poll. But they absolutely deserve the top spot after the week they had. They handed Highland their first MOAC loss of the season with a 6-1 victory. Highland did return the favor, 6-3, in Game 2 of the series but the Whippets followed that up with an 18-6 win over Perkins, a 13-9 win over Clyde and an 11-2 win over River Valley. Quinton Albert has been insane at the plate. In back-to-back games against Perkins and Clyde, Albert crushed two home runs in each of those contests for his third two-home run game of the season. Against Perkins, the Whippets turned a game-ending triple play. Some fun things are happening in Shelby and the Whippets hope to keep things rolling with River Valley and Madison this week before the big series with Clear Fork next week.
