MANSFIELD — Spring sports in Richland County are off to a rip-roaring start.
Baseball, softball and track and field were all in action last week and it didn't take long for local athletes to make headlines. Let's take a look back through the week that was and find out some names that will be household by the end of the season.
Here is this week's Top Performances List.
BAMBINO: Chapman becomes 136th player to club three homers in a single game in Ohio softball history
-Clear Fork’s Chandler Ball came up with the clutch hit to give the Colts a 2-1 walk-off Mid-Ohio Athletic Conference baseball win over Galion. After Brooks Craw led off the seventh inning with a pinch-hit double, Ball delivered the game-winner two pitches later. Ball had the lone RBI in the victory.
-The Cantrell brothers, Dom and Kam, combined to lead the Ontario Warriors to a 6-3 win over Madison. Dom Cantrell earned the win on the mound allowing two runs on no hits with seven strikeouts in 3 2/3 innings of work. Kam Cantrell picked up the save working the final 3 1/3 innings allowing one unearned run on no hits with one strikeout. Dom also added a hit on offense.
-Elise Mullins was an offensive catalyst for the Shelby Whippets in an 8-7 softball win over Norwalk. Mullins provided the fireworks with a solo home run early in the game to set the tone. Peyton Bruskotter had two hits and two RBIs as well.
-James Mahon and Jaren Holden teamed up to lead the Ontario Warriors to a 5-2 MOAC baseball win over River Valley. Mahon had two hits while Holden had one but it was their work on the mound that led to a big league win. Holden picked up the win allowing one run on two hits with three strikeouts in three innings of relief. Mahon worked the first five innings allowing one run on one hit with five strikeouts.
-Lexington’s Tyler Galownia had a big day in a 7-5 Ohio Cardinal Conference baseball win over West Holmes. He has a hit and also earned the win on the mound pitching three innings of perfect relief allowing no runs on one hit with seven strikeouts.
-Crestview’s Gavin Barker was the player of the game in the Cougars’ 2-0 baseball win over Norwalk. He had two hits and an RBI and also earned the win on the mound with a complete-game shutout allowing three hits with six strikeouts.
-Clear Fork’s Mel Blubaugh crushed a solo home run in a 5-2 MOAC softball win over Galion. Macy Shafer picked up the win in the circle allowing two runs on six hits with 10 strikeouts in seven innings of work.
-Lexington’s Makaree Chapman launched three home runs in a 9-2 OCC softball win over West Holmes. She finished the way with three hits and five RBIs and also earned the win in the circle allowing two runs, one earned, on five hits with 13 strikeouts in seven innings of work.
-Crestview’s Bria White paced a balanced offensive attack by the Cougars in a 9-6 win over Norwalk. White had two hits, an RBI and two runs scored to lead the Cougars to a nonconference softball win.
-Bailee Nelson had a monster day in Mansfield Christian’s 21-1 softball win over Liberty Christian. Nelson had four hits including two doubles, a triple and a home run with six RBIs and also earned the win in the circle allowing one unearned run on no hits with 11 strikeouts.
-Alyssa Booker was sensation in Shelby’s 17-3 MOAC softball win over Marion Harding. She led the was offensively with three hits and two RBIs while also earning the win in the circle allowing two runs on two hits with two strikeouts in four innings of work.
-Plymouth’s Lincoln Distl was dominant on the mound in a 2-0 baseball win over Crestline. He earned the win allowing no runs on no hits with 12 strikeouts in six innings of work. Hunter McClure provided the offense with one hit and one RBI.
-Carter Walters was a one-man wrecking crew in Ontario’s 11-8 MOAC baseball win over River Valley. He had one hit with three RBIs and a home run and also earned the win on the mound allowing just two earned runs with six strikeouts in 4 2/3 innings of work.
-Plymouth’s Kristi Yeager had three hits, a double, triple and a home run, in the Big Red’s 18-11 win over Crestline. She had four RBIs on the game for one heck of an offensive day. Madison Montgomery had four his and Presley Martin added three hist and four RBIs.
-Presley Lilly had a solid day at the dish for the Clear Fork Colts in a 13-7 MOAC softball win over Galion. She had two hits and three RBIs with a home run to help the Colts sweep the season series. She also pitched the final four innings of the game adding one strikeout.
-Ontario’s Eden Howard had three hits, two RBIs and a home run in an 8-3 MOAC softball win over River Valley to preserve a series split with the Vikings.
-Gage Powell had himself a day in Lexington’s 8-6 OCC baseball win over West Holmes. He had two hits with an RBI and also earned the win on the mound allowing just two earned runs with 10 strikeouts in a complete-game performance. The win netted head coach Jeff Stricker the 200th win of his career.
-Madison’s Caliyah Clapper broke the softball program’s single-game strikeout record as she fanned 17 in a 6-0 OCC win over Wooster. Clapper allowed just one hit and one walk in a complete-game shutout. She also had one hit and one RBI at the plate.
-Makaree Chapman homered again during Lexington’s 16-1 win over West Holmes. She had two hist and two RBIs while also earning the win in the circle allowing one run on three hits with five strikeouts in four innings of work. She had four home runs in the series and now has six for the season.
-Alyssa Booker was at it again with four hits and two RBIs in a 22-2 MOAC softball win over Marion Harding. She also earned the win in the circle allowing no runs on three hits with two strikeouts in three innings of work to complete the series sweep.
-Shelby’s Gavin Barker won the 100-meter dash at the Madison Track and Field Invitational with a time of 11.27. He also won the 110-meter hurdles in 14.74 and was second in the 200-meter dash with a 23.27 and second in the 300 hurdles with a 42.59.
-Clear Fork’s Ethan Beck took second in the 400-meter dash at the Madison Track and Field Invitational and joined Landen McKee, Devyn Oswalt and Aidan Haring on the winning 4x200 relay team with a time of 1:32.36.
-Mansfield Senior’s 4x100 team of Jordan Au, Syncere Long, Kyree Brooks and Griffin DeBolt took second at the Madison Track and Field Invitational with a time of 45.06.
-Shelby’s Ferron Pena won the discus event at the Madison Track and Field Invitational with a toss of 137-feet and took second in shot put with a throw of 48-04.
-Clear Fork’s Julian Mills earned a win in the shot put competition at the Madison Track and Field Invitational with a toss of 53-feet-2.
-Mansfield Senior’s Ny Petty won the high jump competition at the Madison Track and Field Invitational with a leap of 6-feet-2.
-Shelby’s Ava Bowman won the 100-meter dash at the Madison Track and Field Invitational with a time of 12.67 seconds.
-Clear Fork’s Taylor Bly took second in the 400-meter dash at the Madison Track and Field Invitational with a time of 1:01.66. She also joined Taylor Richmond, Asia Bechtel and Elaina Pelkey on the runner-up 4x200 relay team with a 1:48.94. Richmond won the long jump with a leap of 15-08.
-Shelby’s Anna Will picked up a win in the 800-meter run at the Madison Track and Field Invitational with a time of 2:30.11. Clear Fork’s Quinn Stover was right behind her with a 2:30.25.
-Clear Fork’s Katrina Neal won the 1,600-meter run at the Madison Track and Field Invitational with a time of 5:40.89.
-Shelby’s Emma Montgomery took second in the 3,200-meter run at the Madison Track and Field Invitational with a time of 12:47.96. She also joined Kaylin Mahon, Arabella Ream and Will on the runner-up 4x800 relay team with a 10:45.06.
-Shelby’s Sophia Gano took second in the discus competition at the Madison Track and Field Invitational with a toss of 97-07.
- Sean Tanner earned the win on the mound allowing one run on two hits with 10 strikeouts in 3 2/3 innings of work in Mansfield Senior’s 4-1 win over Toledo Bowsher. Nash Nicolson had two hits and two RBIs to lead the way offensively.
-Lucas’ Brady Anschutz had a hit and three RBIs on offense and earned the win on the mound allowing no runs on two hits with six strikeouts in four innings of work in the Cubs’ 12-0 win over New London.
-Caliyah Clapper continued her big week for the Madison Rams earning the win in the circle allowing three runs, two earned, on four hits with 11 strikeouts sweeping Wooster 11-3. She also had a hit on offense.
-Lexington’s Latrell Hughes won the 800-meter run at the Colonel Crawford Grove/Keller Invitational with a time of 1:54.85.
-Lexington’s Chance Basilone won the 1,600-meter run at the Colonel Crawford Grove/Keller Invitational with a time of 4:26.27. Ontario’s Xavier Trent was runner-up with a 4:32.36.
-Lexington’s Gage Devaney won the 3,200-meter run at the Colonel Crawford Grove/Keller Invitational with a time of 9:57.44. Right behind him was teammate John Bartone with a 9:59.14.
-Ontario’s Aiden Fox won the 110-meter hurdles at the Colonel Crawford Grove/Keller Invitational with a time of 15.53. Crestview’s Liam Kuhn was right behind him with a 15.96 to take second. Fox also won the 300 hurdles with a time of 40.61 with Lexington’s Dantrell Hughes taking second with a run of 42 seconds.
-Ontario’s Zane Curry won the high jump competition at the Colonel Crawford Grove/Keller Invitational with a leap of 5-feet-10.
-Crestview’s Liam Juhn won the pole vault competition at the Colonel Crawford Grove/Keller Invitational with a jump of 14-feet.
-Lexington’s BrystonHess took second in the 200-meter dash at the Colonel Crawford Grove/Keller Invitational with a time of 22.81.
-Crestview’s Logan Friges took second in the 400-meter dash at the Colonel Crawford Grove/Keller Invitational with a time of 51.28.
-Ontario’s Audrey Mahon won the 100-meter dash at the Colonel Crawford Grove/Keller Invitational with a time of 12.78 and won the high jump with a leap of 5-feet.
-Lexington’s Emily Thomas won the 200-meter dash with a time of 26.73, won the 300 hurdles with a time of 48.71 and took second in the 100 with a 12.93.
-Crestview’s Chloe Ringler won the discus competition at the Colonel Crawford Grove/Keller Invitational with a toss of 107-10.
-Ontario’s Arialyn Bischak took second in the 400-meter dash at the Colonel Crawford Grove/Keller Invitational with a time of 1:00.97.
-Ontario’s Kenzie Goodlin took second in the 800-meter run at the Colonel Crawford Grove/Keller Invitational with a time of 2:32.18.
-Lexington’s Katya Prykhodko took second in the 1,600-meter run at the Colonel Crawford Grove/Keller Invitational with a time of 5:36.51.
-Lexington’s Brailey Slone took second in the 3,200-meter run at the Colonel Crawford Grove/Keller Invitational with a time of 12:23.67.
-Lucas’ Riley Trumpower took second in the long jump competition at the Colonel Crawford Grove/Keller Invitational with a leap of 16-3.75.
-Lucas’ Rebekah Case took second in the pole vault at the Colonel Crawford Grove/Keller Invitational with a jump of 11-feet.
