Right about Returner, Wrong Guy

Well, the Cards got their return man. Greg Toler is an excellent punt returner with DRC like speed. He timed in the 4.3s and almost every team had him in for a visit. I not sure he sees the field as a CB, but may well also be a gunner in punt coverage.

Write ups say he has Fluid and smooth hips and EXCELLENT ball skills. HAd 8 Ints last year. May be a small school. But like DRC having that kind of size and speed with ball skills could develop into something. I wont bet against him.

Sounds like a developmental guy. PFW says he needs to get stronger in the weight room...Mr. Toler meet Mr. Lott

Probably not a contributor outside of special teams this season but maybe he develops in to something special after a couple of training camps.

8.2 yards on ten punt returns and 16.8 yards on six kickoff returns

His return yardage is quite unimpressive for that level of competition.

I figured the Cardinals would address the return game at some point. With J.J. gone and Steve Breaston figuring prominently as the third receiver, it makes sense to try and upgrade that area. Hopefully this kid can do that.

True but that could also be the level of blocking that he got as well.

Sounds like a developmental pick that could contribute down the line as a DB later but will have immediate impact now as a special teamer (returner or not). He was just about the only returner we could have gotten that wasn't a WR as we kinda have maxed outour spots for that position.

@ 4.3 with return skills. A definite need. Breaston is no longer an option. I have never seen the kid but he reads well.

Does your comment indicate your opinion that a better option existed at the pick for a return man, or are you aware of negatives regarding Toler?

I picked Sheets on another thread. I did like other returners better, but the guys who saw his pro day said he was very fast and very raw. I don't think anyone had him this high, but then you can't teach speed.

Harry almost never responds in his threads.

I think the "wrong guy" comment was that Harry knew the Cards would draft a KR/PR, but he thought it was going to be a RB or a different position than a CB.

Compares To: MARCUS TRUFANT, Seattle -- Toler returned to freshman form in 2008 and has very good quickness on the field. He is a work in progress handling zone coverage responsibilities and lacks the strength to attack ballcarriers. His strength issues also come into play when he fails to jam receivers at the line of scrimmage. There is much for him to learn, especially coming from his level of competition. However, cornerback is a position at which you can draft an athlete first and hope to develop his football skills.
