Gyn took a few steps closer to his travel mates. "THE Chewbacca? I've heard to much about you. What a pleasure it is to meet you." He offered forth his hand in greeting to the Wookiee.

Chewbacca, clearly liking the young man already, shook his hand with enthusiasm. Gyn winced at the pain but dared not say anything to the towering hero. He had met Wookiees before, but none shone in honor and pride as Chewbacca did. Gyn couldn't help but feel Chewbacca's presence in the Force and found a holy rage tempered by love and dedication. His soul was a jewel, and the enormity of his personality left Gyn momentarily breathless.

I loved seeing Mayhew in interviews. Hilarious. My understanding is the entire crew loved him. One of my favorite pics from the 70's:
