The first time I really paid attention to him was in The Boys in Company C. He reminded me of every drill instructor I saw during basic training and I judge every other show biz DI by his standard. I was surprised to learn he was only 74. RIP.

74?! He looked 74 back in Full Metal Jacket! He must have come out of the womb at 47.

RIP

That's funny. I said almost the same thing to my wife but I used his role as Bruce Campbell's dad. We were quite bummed when that show was cancelled, now I guess we can finally give up the dream of a Brisco County TV reunion.

Does that mean he was only 44 in FMJ? Crazy.

74 in FMJ? No way! He looked in his 50s back then (and was even younger, apparently).

Yeah, he was in his early 40's when they shot that movie and while he might not have looked 74 then, he looked 60+ to me. But he's always had a very "old" sounding voice so maybe that influenced some of us to view him older than he was. And then there's this - I thought Lloyd Bridges was in his 60's on Sea Hunt and he lived for another 150 years at least so what do I know?

R.I.P. Gunny.

R. Lee Ermey was the guy that greeted my father-in-law (R.I.P. to him, too) and terrorized my FIL off the bus at MCRD SD in real life before said FIL went to Vietnam. FMJ was obviously his (my FIL's) favorite movie.

R.I.P. loved that guy. Full Metal Jacket stuck with me after the first time I watched it. Also played the voice of Sergeant in the Toy Story movies.

One of the best lines in cinema history. Vincent D'Onofrio went on to have a pretty decent career too.
