Vazquez
$8 million
Two prospects rumored to be Dioner Navarro and Brad Halsey
So where do you think Vasquez is goping to end up? I bet they trade him to Baltimore for more prospects.

I liked the other deal much, much better.

It's a decent deal.

I guess it all depends on what hapens from here.

Thats exactly it. We don't know what is going to happen here but my guess is that not a single one of these players (with the possible exception of Halsey... although I think he might be gone also) will not be with the team this season.

The deal for Green looks to be all but done now since we got Navarro and the Dodgers GM is in love with the kid and we'll throw in someone like Hillenbrand to fill a hole for 1st base for them. The questions then become "can we add a little more and try to pry Penny away from the Dodgers as well?" (this may not be that far out of the question considering the money saving moves the Dodgers are trying to do) and "What do we get in return for Vazquez?"

Ill reserve judgement until all the other dominoes fall, but I am real disappointed that we are not getting Cano.

For what little its worth, supposedly DBacks officials went out of their way to tell KTAR around 12:30 today that the deal is NOT finalized, that none of the involved parties is in the office today, that no paperwork is ready to be signed or sent anywhere, and that the discussions with New York only are continuing to be refined.

Also for what very little its worth, Gambo said today that he was told pretty clearly by DBacks personnel they are NOT interested in making Brad Penny a big part of any deal, and in fact balked at Florida's involvement as a primary in a 3-way last year because they regarded Penny's sturdiness and health as way too iffy. (Made me wonder if by sticking LA with Penny, whether that influenced LA's decision to pull out of the recent deal.)

A little more info on possible trading partners for Vazquez from ESPN

http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=1955906

According to Peter Gammons' sources, Arizona will not immediately deal Vazquez to another team, but will continue to talk to interested teams which include Baltimore, Philadelphia, Detroit and Texas.

Its from Peter Gammons so take it for what its worth

I say keep Vasquez.
I not sure why all the desire for Green!

Its not a question or not of the Dbacks wanting to keep Vazquez, its whether or not he wants to play here. He has an out clause in his contract after this year that allows him to either demand a trade or become a FA after this year. He doesn't want to pitch on the west coast which was the main reason the 3 team deal with the Dodgers didn't happen. I'm sure they want to keep him but if he doesn't want to play here it could be the Sexson deal all over again.

As for Green, he's a power hitting RF that was formerly a Moorad client. He's a short-term answer at a need position that gives our heralded prospects at the position a chance to get here when they're ready instead of forcing them into the majors.

I think you mean Burnett otherwise that doesn't make any sense whatsoever.

We don't want Penny NOW because of health issues but we wanted him in the original 3 team deal with the Dodgers and Yankees? That doesn't make any sense

Found this on espn, its even scarier...
Potential Yankees starting rotation
Pitcher 2005 salary
Mike Mussina $17M
Randy Johnson $16M
Kevin Brown $15M
Carl Pavano $9M
Jaret Wright $7M
$64 million total is higher than 13 teams' total salaries.

Where's the outrage for this deal? Nearly everybody on this board nearly shat a brick when we were going to get three solid MLB-proven players for Randy. I thought there would be more pissed off fans now that we're getting a guy who doesn't want to play here (Vazquez), a LH pitcher who tops out at 89 (Halsey), and a prospect catcher (Navarro) after we acquired one last summer in exchange for Johnson.

Not as bad as the Schilling deal but I heard better ones last summer and this winter.

maybe people are resigned to the fact that this team won't compete for anything for a long time? (ducks and runs)

Well, as a proponent of the previous - very un-Garagiola type- trade, this sounds a little more like it.

"LH pitcher who tops out at 89."

I haven't heard that one before. Only (unlike Fossum) this guy has a "top notch" slider.

So color me unimpressed, somewhat resigned, but certainly not - by virtue of the latter sentiment - outraged.

The Philly rumors are that we would send Vicente Padilla or Randy Wolf to Arizona for Vazquez. Phillies are disenchanted with Vicente (apparently he has drinking problems or is uncoachable). I'd be shocked if we traded Randy Wolf. That seems to be Gammons or somebody's speculation. Wolf is a Phillie through and through and a real fan favorite and a lefty. Perhaps Arizona is saying Wolf.

If a deal is made with Philly, we would insist on the $8 mil since we are currently over budget. We probably would also send Ryan Howard your way.

However, I'm very leery of Vazquez, though I think he's a terrific pitcher. I think he is hurt.

As it pertains to Javier Vazquez, the New York Post is reporting the Diamondbacks have already began trade talks with the Baltimore Orioles.

An NL executive said Arizona is seriously discussing a deal that would send Vazquez to the Orioles, reuniting him with his one-time Expos GM Jim Beattie, who is now a Baltimore executive VP.

The NL official did not know exactly what the Orioles would give up for Vazquez, but said that when Baltimore talked trade this offseason the most prominent players dangled were pitcher Erik Bedard, closer Jorgé Julio, and outfielders Jay Gibbons and Luis Matos[/b].

The Tigers and Rangers also had contacted the Yankees regularly about Vazquez' availability, and might try to pry the righty from Arizona. Texas has been willing to move Alfonso Soriano for pitching.

A person who was briefed on the Yankee-D'back deal said it was possible Arizona may try to convince Vazquez to stay and see if he likes playing in the desert, with the promise he would be traded at the July trade deadline if not.

Hard to be resigned and outraged at the same time, though maybe that comes out as disgusted, and that fits. The simple fact is - to me, at least - this is so damn predictable it's like deja vu. I had imagined somehow that Moorad, who seems like a bright enough guy, and The Nerds would have some sense of how lame our GM is, but they seem to be encouraging the same garbage moves and fiscally unsound decisions.

I cried my tears when I heard the trade went through yesterday, prematurely, as it turns out. I hate to see RJ go, and I hate that bad general managing the last few years made it unavoidable. I feel enormous gratitude for his time as a DBack, but I cannot cheer for him as a Yankee; I cannot wish him luck in pinstripes. My RJ pics come down when he goes, and I doubt there'll be another DBack altar up for several years (OK, other than the little teeny Conor Jackson one in a corner of the bookshelf.)

GM Joe Blows. :barf: Ownership blows right along with him. Interchangeable Bozos.

Halsey is what they call a "cerebral" pitcher. Not much heat on the fastball but has good movement and control. Fossum supposedly had the good fastball and the knee-buckling curve but we didn't see either of those pitches last year.

If the trade with the Phils go down, it must be one of Brett Myers/Padilla/Randy Wolf with Ryan Howard. The rumor that Padilla is a drunk is a concern, but the notion that he is uncoachable is less of one. I think every one on that team was 'uncoachable' last year under Bowa. I know next to nothing about the Phils so I don't know if Myers is untouchable or Wolf is a fan favorite to prevent those deals. As far as Howard goes, a guy on his AFL team told me there was no way Howard was not going to be an All Star. The guy isn't that bright so take his opinion for what it's worth.

The same can be said about Brett Myers. The problem was more Joe Kerrigan, the pitching coach, than Bowa. But in any event there have been rumors the Phillies are dying to get rid of Padilla and the whispers are drinking. However, Kerrigan's ideas for Vicente were not what Vicente wanted to do. That said - he has a terrific arm, with lots of natural movement on his pitches.
