All eyes are on the 2025 NFL Draft this week, which begins on Thursday night. Teams are excited to add young talent to their rosters, prospects can’t wait to find out where they’re going to land and fans are anxious to see who their teams draft.

Not everyone is giddy with excitement about this week’s big event, though. Rams right tackle Rob Havenstein spoke to reporters on Monday and he shared the harsh reality of the draft for NFL veterans.

They’re among the select few who aren’t looking forward the draft because in a lot of cases, their teams are drafting their replacements. That could be the case for Havenstein, who’s turning 33 in May and is entering the final year of his contract.

"Every year with the draft coming up, everyone's excited about it," Havenstein said. "A lot of people who aren't excited about it are the guy's already on teams. That's how it is every year. That's how we see certain things. There are people coming in to take your job, which is the way it should be. You have to prove yourself year in and year out. Whether guys are slated to start or not, preseason and OTAs don't make a lick of difference right now. It's all about how you kind of go about your business. The best five will start and we'll go from there.”

Havenstein mentioned that it’s the “nature of the business” for players to be replaced, whether for performance or financial reasons. Beaux Limmer is experiencing that right now after being the starting center last year; he’s likely to be replaced by Coleman Shelton in 2025 following the veteran’s return to L.A. in free agency.

“I thought Beaux had a really good season last year," Havenstein said. "There are a couple growing pains as all rookies do. No one steps in… well, I wouldn't say no one, but it's definitely really hard for somebody to come in, start right away and not have that normal rookie learning curve. It's not when we started this thing last year that we were like, ‘Alright, Beaux’s going to be our center.’ We had two guys battling it out. That's just the way it happened. I did talk to Beaux and that's going to stay between us. That's the nature of this business."

The Rams are in the market for a right tackle and could take one as early as the first round. The rookie won't replace Havenstein right away, but it's very possible Los Angeles will move on from Havenstein in 2026.
