I do not know if this has already been discussed, but the physical issues with Robin Lopez seem to be significant. I had missed this little quote from this article

But Loepz was a shell of his former self, losing eight inches off his vertical and showing little to no mobility on the floor.

I cannot imagine how losing 8 inches of vertical would limit your game, especially since such a loss must also mean a huge loss in mobility. This must get fixed or I fear his career is near an end.

I am not sure how to take this. On one hand it is encouraging, if he can get his back fixed, there is chance he could have the impact he did before. On the other hand, if he cannot, he is done.

I think his impact was overblown to begin with. I have posted his numbers from both last season and this season. Everybody was getting excited about him because he was scoring a bit more and had a block every now and then. We were so desperate for a legit center that every once in while when he played like one people were elated.

However, after a deep dive of his numbers, he really wasn't all that impressive. If you look at how many times he actually scored in double figures and rebounded in double figures it's downright ugly. If you look at where he ranks in almost every category to other Centers (starters and backups) who play at least 20 minutes or more he looks even less impressive. Yes, it's better than what we had but that doesn't make it good. People complained left and right how last year when he was healthy how often he played below the rim for a 7 footer. Now losing 8 inches off his vertical this year it was even worse. That is just insult to injury.....literally.

When you take off the homer goggles you will see that the the things we drafted him for (rebounding, defense and overall interior presence) were lacking even last year. When it really counted in the WCF, we couldn't get stops, gave up too many points in the paint and couldn't rebound worth a lick at times.

Even if he gets "fixed" he is no better than a backup center on a legit contenting team.

If Robin is still having problems due to his previous back injury this helps to explain why he regressed this past season. I'm not saying Robin would have been more than a backup center in most circumstance, however, back problems are nothing to shove aside. Actually I'm surprised this issue has not been discussed more. I have found back problems can have a degenerative effect in regard to mobility. I hope this is not the case with Robin.

I suspect that Robin's play in 2009-10 was assisted by Amare playing so well that he drew double teams. In any case, the back probelms make me think the Suns are going to need to get another tough guy.
