Game Preview

The Houston Rockets' best play this season may be coming at the wrong time.

The Rockets will try for their fourth straight win and eighth in nine games when they visit the Pacific Division-leading Phoenix Suns in the final game for both teams before the All-Star break.

The Rockets have posted a 7-1 record in February after a stretch in which they lost 16 of 21.
Houston tallied season-highs in points, field goal percentage and margin of victory in a 128-97 victory Tuesday over the Los Angeles Clippers.

McGrady led the Rockets with 28 points on 10-of-21 shooting in the rout.

"I was pretty focused," said McGrady, who will start for the Western Conference in Sunday's All-Star game in Houston.

"I told those guys I've been dealing with some things personally off the basketball court, so I haven't really been myself on the court.

"I just wanted to come out and take all of that personal stuff and leave it off the court and try to get a win for my team."

That effort came one game after scoring just seven points on 3-of-20 shooting in a 90-83 win over New York.
Center Yao Ming, also an All-Star starter, notched 17 points and 12 rebounds for his 15th double-double of the season and is shooting 64 percent from the field over the last three games.

Houston recorded just six wins during the 21 games Yao missed following toe surgery, but the team is 7-2 since he returned to the lineup on Jan. 30.

Rafer Alston added 17 points and 13 rebounds while newly acquired Keith Bogans (18 points), David Wesley (16) and Stromile Swift (12) also scored double-digits for the Rockets.

The Rockets are holding opponents to 91.1 points per game, but will face a challenge against the Suns -- the league's highest-scoring team at 107.0 points per contest.

Phoenix reached 100 points for the 14th straight game in a 116-101 victory Wednesday over the Denver Nuggets. The Suns drained 14 3-pointers and shot 51 percent from the field for their sixth win in seven games.

Shawn Marion an All-Star reserve, recorded 21 points and 12 rebounds while Raja Bell added 20 points for the Suns, who had 33 assists. Steve Nash, a starting All-Star guard, had 19 points and 12 assists and Boris Diaw also added a double-double.

"This team is great at distributing the basketball and Nash and Boris (Diaw) did a great job of finding people," said Suns coach Mike D'Antoni, whose team outrebounded the Nuggets 53-37. "When the ball moves like that and Raja and everybody gets involved, it makes it really easy and when we can hit 14, 3-pointers, we'll hurt a lot of people."
Phoenix has won six of the last eight matchups, but has lost two straight at home to Houston

Rockets Game Notes

The Houston Rockets on Monday acquired F Maciej Lampe from the New Orleans Hornets in exchange for G Moochie Norris. The 6-11 Lampe has averaged 3.5 points and 2.3 rebounds in 60 career games with Phoenix and the Hornets. He was selected by the New York Knicks with the 30th pick in the 2003 NBA Draft but never played for the Knicks. In 2003-04, Lampe played in 21 games for the Suns, averaging 4.6 points and 2.1 rebounds per game. Lampe averaged 3.1 points and 2.4 rebounds in 37 games with Phoenix and the Hornets last year. This season, he has played in only two games for the Hornets. Norris averaged 2.2 points and 1.0 assists and 1.2 rebounds in 29 games with the Rockets this season. Norris was in his second stint with Houston after being acquired in a trade with the New York Knicks on February 24.

Suns Game Notes

The Suns made the most of their opportunities from the arc Wednesday, making 14-of-25 3-pointers while forcing the Nuggets to miss all 14 of their attempts from long range. "Obviously, we shot the ball really well," coach Mike D'Antoni said. "When you shoot 14-of-25 3-pointers, you can hurt a lot of people." ... All five starters scored in double figures and three posted double-doubles. G Steve Nash has 19 points and 12 assists, F Shawn Marion collected 21 points and 12 rebounds and F Boris Diaw chipped in 17 and 10. ... Behind Marion and Diaw, Phoenix held a commanding 53-37 rebounding advantage.

RUN THEM TO DEATH!!!!!!!! That's all I can say. We cannot slow the game down at all. Yao will eat us inside and I think the best person guarding him is Diaw, not Thomas.

If there's a game we're primed to lose it's this one. But the Suns did get some good rest at the end of the game last night, and playing in Denver should make today's game seem easier.

Does anyone know our record on the second end of back-to-backs when we blew out the first game? I think it's pretty good.

I heard that James Jones was hurt last night and Raja played 43 mins. I am concerned about who will guard McGrady when Raja is getting a blow, and he will need one, after last night. Foul trouble could also be a problem if JR is out and fatigue sets in. Hopefully, the suns can suck it up for one more game. I agree that running the rockets is the answer, but its hard to do in the second of back to backs with one of our better bench players injured.

since burke has been playing so well, I'm sure mike will have him guarding tracy for most of the game.;)

This is what I anticipate:

Suns will have a pretty good lead at half. Then we start missing our shots, getting tired and our defense will suffer. Then T-MAC goes on fire. There's really nothing that can stop T-MAC when he is on. Bell is not a stopper type of defender. Not with his height, speed and size but Bell can annoy the hell of the player (ex: Kobe).

We need Bell's stable offense and I am afraid he'll go cold tonight. I have a strong feeling about it.

This means Eddie House will probably need to get on fire for us to win close game tonight especially James Jones is injured. Maybe Barbosa will be on fire. :D

The goal is to run them to death and force them to put Yao on the bench and when Yao comes in, try to go inside and foul him out.

JJ's nagging injuries are getting quite annoying. Been unlucky this year.

Agree what T-mac does will play a big factor. Raja will have to be on his game tonight.

Marion matches up pretty well with T-Mc(it's not Mac, damnit!). McGrady has a tendency to take a lot of jump shots. Marion has the length to at least bother the shots and recover from behind when he goes for fakes.

Anyway, let's just say that if we have to resort to Barbosa guarding him for extended minutes we could be in a lot of trouble.

Since so many were amused by the Spurstalk thread, here's what they're saying over at Clutchfans:

http://bbs.clutchfans.net/showthread.php?t=108820&page=1&pp=20

I don't see why we shouldn't see a repeat of the clips game. the suns play no defense.
The only two teams I consider tough to beat are Spurs and Mavs. I don't see why we can't beat Suns.
Suns have no answer to Yao, even Amare is on the court. Yao has beaten him a few times before
JVG will sic (6'5" guard) Bogans on Marion. I expect a breakout game from T-Mac.
Rafer and Nash play eash other to a draw. Our bench and defense will beat them, our depth is actually now a huge asset now thanks to all the playing time Head, Hayes and Stro got during the injuries. Bogans has another double digit scoring game Rox win.
The only way we're loosing against the Suns is if the refs start
calling cheap fouls against Yao! Having both are allstars on the floor
at the same time along with Alston steering the ship there is little the
opposing defense can do. Both are stars demand double coverage creating
vast opportunities on the offensive end.
I'm sure we will win, there's no reason why we won't.
The last game between the two teams was in Houston--that was the game where Yao only scored 8 points. McGrady and Rafer "Skip to my Lou" Alston were both injured at the time.

Suns are currently favored by 5 for tonight's game.

i love how they talk of yao as though he belongs on the all star team. an watch out bogans scoring in double digits. watch out. maybe we should just start burke, skita, thompson, jackson, and house. since we dont have a shot.

I can't think of many centers in the west that are better.

Camby and Kaman are all that come to mind as close.

I voted for Camby but that was before he was injured.

BTW this post is a classic. It is like one continuous run-on sentence with periods thrown in randomly.
no reason the rox should lose this game after thumping LA The Rockets
will match up quite well bc we can run and we have beef in the middle
they dont have right now mr. amare. I hate the suns and nash go rockets.
How in the world did we end up with all of our players injured and we get a
crappy year, and suns lose jj to free agency and amare to injury and a old
Nash running pg and they are good to go this year. Boggles my mind honestly Rockets win again baby.

i have always considered duncan a center. but that is just me. camby has played in more games than yao so i dont see how his injury effected him more than yao's injuries. i also think brad miller is better. but the west is weak at the 5 spot(althought so is the league).

Unless they've changed it in recent years, the NBA teams themselves decide which of their players to put on the ballot at which positions. (I think maybe each team gets four players, or something.) So any discussion of starters can't fall back on evasions like "Duncan is a center," because he's not listed that way on the ballot by the Spurs. Once you get to reserves, anything goes.

Can't wait for the game to start... Its on TNT so I'll get to see some of it:)

I'm new here and currently from Indiana, but I plan to move to Phoenix soon... Anyways, I had a question. Is Phoenix on Pacific Time or Mountain Time? I thought mountain which I believe is what it was when I visited back in July of '98 but maybe I'm wrong.

I think it is Pacific time, plus 1 hour. But what do I know, I'm in Oregon.

For the record, Arizona is on Mountain Time the WHOLE Year, but doesn't participate in Daylight Savings.

Back to the game - WOW, Houston sucks.

I sense MURDER....

Please don't let this game get even within 15pts.... keep it up guys. What a great way to get exposure on National TV before all-star!

Our defense is very tight and kinda physical. I feel the refs gave us more benefit tonight and they let us play quite physical. We've got tons of steals and when the Rocket players get inside, we just basically slap away. lol Yao is really a non factor against us this season...

By the way, I saw there is this % thing with Nash 59%, AI 23% and Billups 19%... what is that poll about?
