I always thought if the closer blows a save, he shouldn't be credited for the win. It should revert back to the pitcher they blew it for.

But that will never happen. The rule is that the relief pitcher of record in such a case is the one still in the lineup when the go-ahead run scored.

If it is any consolation, I think Rodney got both a blown save and a win. And a relief pitcher is measured by saves vs. save opportunities rather than wins, which reflects the hitters' performances.

My opinion of Rodney has changed since May. He has actually been surprisingly better than he started out. Yep last night wasn't cool, but he didn't lose control of the game like when he started out.

Well, back to my original post. Rodney has now blown two straight. This one against the Dodgers really hurt.

Rodney's tendency to get into trouble and try to work his way out of it and his inconsistency over the season have made him less than a lock down closer, especially against good teams.

Don't drop him, move him to 7th innings stints, where there will be a safety net -- the 8th and 9th innings. And the hell with his arrows into the air. He's 40 years old and hardly a prospect for the future.

Reward Archie Bradley (who wants to be a starter but has accommodated the D-backs by relieving, lately as set-up man) by naming him the closer for the rest of the season. If he, in fact, becomes the most dominant closer in baseball, he may be OK with keeping that role rather than compete for a starting spot next season.

I vote for the beard over the hat.

I dont blame Rodney for the loss as much as I blame Lovullo for letting Rodney lose it.

When you walk 3 guys in a row, its over. Pull him. He couldnt throw a strike in 12 consecutive pitches. The moment he walked the 1st guy I wouldve had a 2nd arm warming up.



On a sidenote, there was an amusing human study going on last night during Rodney implosion. There is a direct correlation between how bad Rodneys playing, and how much people hate his hat.
