Roger Federer has suffered some unexpected reverses at the US Open over the years, and last night's five-set defeat at the hands of Grigor Dimitrov – a man who had never beaten him before – must now be added to the list. Just when New York's tennis-lovers thought that they were going to see Federer play his old rival Rafael Nadal for the first time at this tournament, Dimitrov intervened with a performance of huge heart and determination, twice coming from a set down to complete his 3-6, 6-4, 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 victory. By overcoming Federer in a match few thought he could win, Dimitrov followed in the footsteps of of John Millman here last year, and Tommy Robredo in 2013.
