He should be charged with the costs of bringing him in since he fled. Not just him, but any fugitive. Make them pay restitution.

Not sure about the rest - how are we "missing" crimes? Not being sarcastic. Heck, my uncle was murdered less than two years ago so that's always on my mind.

More recently there have been several break-ins and thefts at my work. Crime and the POS criminals that don't care about anyone but themselves is something I haven't missed.

I'm the type of person to get involved if I see something wrong going down also - which worries my wife constantly.

Just saying that a random rape that happened last night doesn't have a 2 page thread, that's all.

The problem is, this trial or whatever it is, is guaranteed to be a circus. Heck, it already is. And guess who gets to pay for it? I do. Sure, in a perfect world, Polanski himself would pay for it, but it would never happen in the American justice system.

There shouldn't be a trial. He struck a plea agreement. It was supposed to be for time served, but it will likely be up to the judge who will not treat him well based on his flight from justice.

Actually, he took a plea to go to a 90-day evaluation in custody in Chino. He went, the evaluation only took 48 days (the prosecutor acknowledges that everyone in the justice system knows that evals don't usually take the full 90 days allowed), the judge was getting heat and recinded the offer and wanted to put him back in prison what he said was another stint to bring it to 90-days. There are also plenty of witnesses that say the judge had told them in private that he had no intention of keeping his word (I say "his word" because these deals were cut behind closed doors).

Polanski was getting screwed by a rouge judge. While I certainly don't condone what he did, I also understand why he fled. He wasn't getting justice; he was getting screwed. Even the prosecutor says Polanski wasn't getting a fair shake.

There's plenty of mitigating circumstances to his flight. I don't think he's going to do much more time.

It should also be noted that the victim and her family told the court they didn't want Polanski to do time in the first place.

Swiss Say Polanski To Be Quietly Moved
Swiss Minister: 'No Reason' To Appeal Decision
BRADLEY S. KLAPPER, Associated Press Writer

November 26, 2009

GENEVA -- Roman Polanski will be quietly transferred from a Zurich jail to house arrest in his Alpine chalet, Swiss authorities said Thursday, adding that the process will last at least another day.

Polanski was being held in a Swiss jail a day after a court granted him release on $4.5 million bail, the Swiss Justice Ministry said. The 76-year-old director, who must wear an electronic monitoring bracelet, will not be released Thursday, ministry spokesman Folco Galli said.

The transfer would be handled discreetly, Galli told The Associated Press.

"We don't want to show him off like an exotic animal," he said. "It will not be a matter of hours ... The bail has to be transferred, transport needs to be organized and the house arrest must be organized."

The Swiss justice minister said she saw no reason to challenge the surprise decision, but Galli said a final decision has yet to be made on waiving an appeal. Authorities will also decide "in a couple of weeks" whether to extradite Polanski for fleeing sentencing in Los Angeles over three decades years ago, he said.

The bail decision was a major win for the director of "Rosemary's Baby," ''Chinatown" and "The Pianist" after a series of legal setbacks following his Sept. 26 arrest as he arrived in Zurich to receive a lifetime achievement award at a film festival.

He has been held in a Zurich-area prison, believed to be in Winterthur, but Warden Walter Vogt told the AP on Thursday that Polanski "could be here or he could be in Bern," Switzerland's capital.

Polanski was accused of raping the 13-year-old girl after plying her with champagne and a Quaalude pill during a modeling shoot in 1977. He was initially indicted on six felony counts, including rape by use of drugs, child molesting and sodomy, but he pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of unlawful sexual intercourse.

In exchange, the judge agreed to drop the remaining charges and sentence him to prison for a 90-day psychiatric evaluation. The evaluator released Polanski after 42 days, but the judge said he was going to send him back to serve out the 90 days.

Polanski then fled the United States on Feb. 1, 1978, the day he was to be sentenced, and has lived in France since.

The court last month rejected Polanski's first bail offer, with his Gstaad chalet as collateral.

Before Wednesday's decision, Polanski offered a bank guarantee that would cause him to sacrifice his family's home in Paris if he flees justice again.

"I am very happy and relieved," Mathilde Seigner, Polanski's sister-in-law told Le Parisien daily, adding that the director's imprisonment had "enormous consequences on a psychological level" for his children. After Polanski's release, "we're going to drink a nice glass of Champagne and toast together," she said.

Polanski claims the judge and prosecutors in the U.S. acted improperly in his case. His attorneys will argue before a California appeals court next month that the charges should be dismissed regardless of whether Polanski is extradited.

For the duration of the extradition procedures, it appears Polanski will be confined to his $1.6 million chalet surrounded by snowcapped peaks on the outskirts of Gstaad, one of the most exclusive winter resorts in the world. Celebrities such as Elizabeth Taylor and Roger Moore have called the town home, and it remains popular with celebrities and royalty.

In the village famous for its discretion, some people weren't pleased with all the attention.

"I don't want to talk about what he did," said Martin von Gruenigen, a retired dairy farmer, as he walked his dog in front of Polanski's home. "I have little contact with the rich. Life is quiet here, but there are things I don't like at all here. Like the rich buying all the houses, so we locals can't afford to buy a house."

Polanski's "Milky Way" is a large chalet with a stunning view of the surrounding Alps, including the strikingly snowcapped Ruebli peak. The three-story building with a white stucco wall topped by the brown wooden upper floors appeared deserted Thursday.

The court said Polanski would be subjected to "constant electronic surveillance" at his chalet and an alarm would be activated if he leaves the premises or takes off the bracelet.

The filmmaker is still seen a high flight risk, according to the court.

Lewis: 'I will never forgive Polanski for what he has done'
May 17, 2010
WENN

British actress Charlotte Lewis is adamant she will "never forgive" Roman Polanski for allegedly abusing her when she was just 16 years old -- insisting the incident ruined her life.

Lewis, who appeared in Polanski's 1986 film "Pirates," held a news conference on Friday, claiming the director took advantage of her "in the worst way" at his apartment in France when she was just a teenager.

The alleged incident came several years after Polanski fled the U.S. for France, skipping sentencing after pleading guilty to a charge of unlawful sex with 13-year-old Samantha Geimer in 1977.

Lewis, now 42, has given an interview to Britain's Mail on Sunday newspaper, alleging her encounter with Polanski in 1983 affected all her future relationships and ruined her Hollywood career as she sank into drug abuse the 1990s.

She tells the publication, "I know I should have gone to the relevant authorities at the time but I was scared and ashamed. I somehow thought it was my fault. He sexually abused me and manipulated me in the worst way. He has scarred me and the experience has definitely put a strain on my life. I was recently engaged to a lovely man, but I would often clam up physically and I don't think I am very good in relationships. I will never forgive Polanski for what he has done to me. I'll never know if my life would have been different if this had not happened. There needs to be some justice. I'm telling the truth and Roman Polanski knows I'm telling the truth."

And Lewis is fuming about the number of high-profile Hollywood stars who have come out in support of Polanski, adding, "I've been angry with some of the people in Hollywood who have spoken out in support of Polanski. Hollywood is giving the wrong message."

Lewis says she has met with Los Angeles County Deputy District Attorney David Walgren to report her allegations.

The only problem I have with this is who her lawyer is.

Lewis did not report the incident at the time, and it is unclear why she chose to hold a news conference now.

Lewis, 42, alleges that the incident occurred in a Paris apartment. The legal age of consent in France is 15, according to French law.

The actress was a child star in Britain on the TV show "Grange Hill" and also appeared in movies.

She made the statements during a news conference with her Los Angeles attorney, Gloria Allred.

$10 says she gets a settlement and never meets with the police.

Do you think Allred weakens her case?

I think this is a cash grab or a opportunity to make her name relevant for a few brief moments and nothing more at this point. Why do you hold a press conference before you talk to the police.

Or Polanski realy is a creep who liked to force himself on other young girls and she wants it known that the 1977 case was not an isolated incident. This kind of information might encourage other women to come forward and would definitely help in getting him brought back to the U.S.

I am not saying that he did not do it and is not a creep. He needs to go to prison. I am saying that the motive behind this seems like it is for the wrong reason when you involve the person she has who has a shady record the last couple of years defending Octomom, a couple of Tigers mistress's and try to extort money from David Boreanaz. If this was about justice, then why not go to the police.

It's likely that her case against him is weak (so many years, her word against his, age of consent, etc) so the publicity angle works to ensure the information is "out there."

I doubt he limited his urges to these two young girls. I think she just wanted to expose him for the type of man he really was/is...not that many of us had any doubt.

That's probably true. Gloria doesn't spend much time in court. Cases that go to court are more likely handled by her firm.

Another recent Polanski-related bit of news:

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/new...ns-libel-case-against-British-journalist.html

The Polish-born film director Roman Polanski used the High Court to sue the American magazine Vanity Fair in 2005 over an article which claimed he had tried to seduce a woman while he was on his way to his wife’s funeral in 1969.

Polanski was allowed to give evidence via videolink from Paris to avoid extradition to the US, where he is wanted for having sex with a 13-year-old girl.

After he was awarded £50,000 damages, lawyers on both sides of the Atlantic described the case as “a disgrace” to Britain’s judicial system.

--------------------------------

I couldn't find any other sources for this except the little write-up it received in this related article. I heard about it through some cable news report in which the guy blasted Britain's judicial system for allowing a fugitive to proceed with a court case using a videolink. Just more special privileges for Roman. Bleh.

How about the fact that so many idiotic Hollywood stars have come forward to support this scumbag? I'd probably want to go public just to take them to task.

As to Hollywood...ugh. Really, is there any group of high-profile, famous people that are more stupid, slanted in opinion, and just plain callous in how they speak out in public? Supporting scum like Polanski? Congo lines of these idiots travelling down to shake hands with Chavez?

Not to mention the fact that he had made good on his sentence all those years ago and the judge was going to really f him over.

Look, Polanski IS a creep. But he was also about to get railroaded. The issue of his detainment isn't black and white at all.

Here's a great article on that very subject.

The files that damn Roman Polanski: Court account of what director REALLY did to a girl, 13

What he did to the girl (and admitted to), his fake remorse, his actions after being charged, the whitewashed psych evaluation that portrayed him as a saint, etc.

Hmmm...he was up for a possible sentence of 50 years...works out a sweetheart deal to get special treatment no one else would have gotten...and flees because a judge was leaning toward tossing out the ridiculous plea agreement (because of Polanski's public behavior and the sketchiness of the psych report)...for at least 6 more weeks in jail and/or voluntary deportation. Not exactly "being railroaded" in my book.

Sounds like he could have kept a low profile and shown some true remorse and gotten his sweetheart deal. He only has himself to blame. Most of the media acts like the judge just had it out for him for no reason.

----------------------------------------------

Here's another look at the situation:

Here's the documentary I saw on the subject. In it, even the prosecuting attorney says "yeah, he was getting a raw deal. Not surprised he fled." (paraphrasing, of course).

Didn't assisant DA recant on that?

I read afterward that he claims he only said that "too make sure he got appropriate screentime."

I don't know. If that's the case, then it sounds like both the judge AND the DA were out to get famous.

Roman Polanski free, Swiss reject US extradition request

BERN, Switzerland -- The Swiss government declared renowned film director Roman Polanski a free man on Monday after rejecting a U.S. request to extradite him on a charge of having sex in 1977 with a 13-year-old girl.

The Swiss mostly blamed U.S. authorities for failing to provide confidential testimony about Polanski's sentencing procedure in 1977-1978.

The stunning decision could end the United States' three-decade pursuit of Polanski, unless he travels to another country that would be willing to apprehend him and weigh sending him to Los Angeles. France, where he has spent much of his time, does not extradite its own citizens, and the public scrutiny over Switzerland's deliberations may dissuade other nations from making such a spectacular arrest.

Another celebrity dirt bag gets away with it. Big surprise. I was really hoping with the information about the actress of The Golden Child that would push things over the top. The guy deserves to rot in jail despite being a great director. However, great director trumps dirt bag in this case.
