Temperatures reached the high mark this year on Monday for the first of eight rookie and first year player sessions of “on-field work.” Fortunately for new players who haven’t yet experienced a summer in Arizona, with 13 coaches working with just 22 players, the practices consist of a lot more individualized teaching and are at a much slower pace.

‘It is a lot easier,” offered first-round draft choice Antrel Rolle. “The pace is a lot slower. We are not doing anything too heavy.”

Rolle joined cornerbacks Aaron Francisco, Eric Green, Lamont Reid, defensive linemen Tim Bulman and Tyler King, guard Rolando Cantu, linebackers Darryl Blackstock, Isaiah Ekejiuba and Lance Mitchell, punter/kicker Matt Fordyce, quarterback Tim Chang, receivers Fabian Davis, Carlyle Holiday, LeRon McCoy, Luke Powell, and Dan Sheldon, running back Roger Robinson, safety Ernest Shazor, tight ends Adam Bergen and John Bronson for the Monday mid-morning practice.

Head Coach Dennis Green said he expects the young group to pick up on a lot of things including their conditioning, weight training, film study, and play on the field.

“We’ve got two weeks of this and we feel that they’ll be in pretty good shape when June 4th starts,” Green stated. “They can learn quite a bit. What it is really, is a rehearsal.”

Following the team’s mini camp two weeks ago, Rolle said he was going home to Miami to work on his off-press coverage technique, something he hadn’t seen before mini camp.

“I never played off coverage before,” Rolle said. “I was always a press guy at the University of Miami. I do pretty good on seven on seven and team, but it’s the one on ones when they have all the time to throw the ball and they can work you any which way. I just have to get my hips used to moving with the receivers laterally and up and down the field. It is something I’ve gotten a lot more comfortable with, but it’ll still take some time.”

Green said he isn’t worried about Rolle picking up on the new technique.

“We knew when we took him that he’s an aggressive corner,” Green said. “He’s probably the best bump and run, get up on him, physical corner that’s come out in a long time. Now, we are trying to add a few other techniques to it. But, we are always going to allow the players to do what they can do well and he’s very physical and can get after a guy and he’ll do that for us.”

Each day following the workouts, the rookies also meet with Director of Player Programs Anthony Edwards for classroom seminars on continuing education, finances, and life in the NFL.

Green said the team also worked out quarterback Jeff Otis out of Columbia.

“There is still so much talent out there,” Green noted. “You always want to be open-minded about it if there is somebody who can help your roster so we wanted to work him out.”

Jeff’s father, Jim, was an All-American fullback at Ohio State who played for the Cardinals from 1973-78.

I'm pretty sure that Arrington can't participate until he graduates, but where is Elton Brown?

This camp is vitaly important. All the drills, terminology, work rates, and class room sessions are designed to bring the rookies to a point where they won't just be lost when the veterans show up. If these kids don't soak up their playbooks now, regular camp will leave them far behind.

Apparently, even the June 2 week minicamp is so tiring, players don't do much but lift, work out, class work, eat, and sleep.

Today is the true beginning of the 2005 season. Bring it on.

Jim Otis. Wasn't his nickname the Golden Palomino?

"Arrington, Brown and rookie free agent Aaron Francisco will miss the first few days of the rookie camp because NFL rules prevent participation of rookies whose schools have not yet held graduation." From Sunday Arizona Republic.

Wonder how Francisco got to attend?

Has anybody seen Adam Bergman work out? Whats the word out there on the tightend position? I've heard that Bergen was a great receiving TE in college and wondering how he's doing now that he's with the NFL. From what I've been hearing TE is a wide open position there and so far I haven't heard any favorites.
Thanks in advance
