IF AND WHEN HEALTHY...
That would be another typical Keim special. It’s like he believes caps space is best used to dump players than improve the team.
I still like DJ.
I still like DJ.
@BritCard got it right. The June 1st designation. A wild cap hit like this would make no sense to me just to free up a roster spot.
Yes. But I believe we’d want to do it based on an agreed trade with another team.Is there any way we can re-structure his deal to make it more cap friendly and then trade him? I know we still over-paid him. Just a thought????

Any restructure would just make it more expensive to cut him next year.
The only restructure options are convert salary into bonus pushing more of it into next year or give him a new contract with more years and just extend the problem.
You wouldn't restructure him with an eye on cutting him. You'd only do it to facilitate a trade.
I don't see that happening. Why would DJ do it?
What Keim can do is agree to pay part of DJ's salary next year as part of the agreement. So his contract would stay the same but we would keep more of the cap hit.

He would do it because it would move more money in to a bonus, which means it is immediately available to him. It would also help facilitate a trade as no team would touch him at his current salary.

Well, this is the only option to get rid of him, without including draft picksTo facilitate a trade, you'd convert , say, $5 million in that salary into bonus. Then you could trade him, and the counterpart team would be on the hook for $5 million in guaranteed salary in 2020 and $2.1 million in 2021. The Cards would take an immediate $11 million cap hit (the new bonus plus $6 million of his original signing bonus) and be off the hook after this season.
A restructure would allow DJ to go somewhere where he has a place to play and that wants him without giving up any guaranteed money. He has $10.2 million in guaranteed salary in 2020 and another $2.1 million in 2021 salary is guaranteed if he's still on the roster on the 3rd day of the league year (per over the cap).

IT's already immediately available to him. He's rec'd his signing bonus and his 2020 salary is guaranteed.
David Johnson signed a three year, $39 million contract extension with the Cardinals on September 10, 2018. Johnson's injury guarantee is worth $31,882,500 with $24,682,500 being fully guaranteed at signing. Johnson's full guarantee consists of a $12 million signing bonus, his 2018 and 2019 base salaries, and $5.1 million of his 2020 base salary. If Johnson is on the roster on the 3rd day of the 2019 league year the balance of his 2020 base salary will be fully guaranteed. If on the roster on the 3rd day of the 2020 league year, $2.1 million of Johnson's 2021 salary will become fully guaranteed. Every year of the contract there are $1.05 million in roster bonuses tied to being active. Another $6 million in incentives can increase the value of the contract to $45 million if earned.
Converting his salary to a bonus spreads the cap hit and makes the money immediately available, just because the money is guaranteed does not mean he has the money in hand.
Yes, but he only has 2 years left on his current deal, and he’s scheduled for an $8 million salary in 2021.Converting his salary to a bonus spreads the cap hit and makes the money immediately available, just because the money is guaranteed does not mean he has the money in hand.

For all that to happen you have to get lawyers and agents involved. The Cards could just agree to pay part of his salary with the trading team. Much simpler that way.
