Round 2 Decision

I was asked if the Cards do go DT in round 1, do they need to trade up in round 2 to secure a needed Edge? If the Cards offer their fourth they could likely move to pick 42 or 43 from their 50 spot. If that’s not early enough their third would buy them the first or second pick in round 2. Of course depending who’s on the board some teams may be unwilling to trade if their guy is there. Many Edges will go in round 1, but a few good ones will slide early in round 2. Whether one will last until 43 is dicey.

The top couple DTs will go early, ..leaving guys we can get in round 2 so we should focus on pass rushing olb in round 1....maybe even use our 4th to move up a couple slots

Would make things a lot easier if we sign a FA for edge or DT. While the names arent all world they would be an upgrade, and help to not have the need to trade a draft pick to move up

It seems signing a free agent at DT or Edge would be wise and still draft a DT and edge with our first two picks.
Add experienced to our OL with free agents.

There are some round 2 edge guys with potential. The kids from Marshall and Ole Miss(I think) come to mind right away. I looked at a consensus ranking board and Sawyer was listed at 46.

i also think premium positions will start to move up as we get closer

just to pick my current favorite future Cardinal - Jack Sawyer. I think it would be a shock (assumiing no bad medical news or the like) if he made it to pick 46.

If we go Harmon …grant or Williams the Ohio state dt at 16 I would be looking for one of those 2 Ohio state ends possibly at 48…..my favorite combo is one of the top 5 edges at 16 ….then deone walker

I thought about it but I don’t think he is a Gannon culture type guy.
Not sure 17m per year is worth 6 sacks. He’s had 22 sacks in 6 years.

I agree with you. Would be amazing if JG could coach him up though...that is the constant tease of a player with that kind of potential.

The dilemma in this draft how the players fall. It’s a very average draft class, but talent fits our position needs. It’s just how the draft develops, because there will be a very good player at a position of need but maybe not the exact position with the biggest need.

DT and edge are the obvious picks in the two first rounds, but if there is a run on Edge there might not be a player worth the #16. The dilemma then comes in here, because if there is a run on DL that would most likely mean top talent at secondary need is there like eg. LB or OT. If Jalon Walker or Josh Simmons is there, do you draft or trade?

He’s not the anchor Graham or Grant would be but he can willingly anchor and should add strength after draft. He is strong now at collapsing the pocket and TFLs. He’s not my top choice but on my list. Long gone by round 2.

I like Deone Walker out of Kentucky... in the 2nd round...but I hear some guys are putting a first round grade on him.
However...he seems to have a reputation for being poorly conditioned and getting lazy at times...
But!! Poor conditioning and laziness were also a knock on Carter a couple years back and that hasn't stopped him from being a monster in the nfl...and Walker is bigger and stronger...so maybe the first round grade is appropriate.

He isn't likely to get much action. Predicted to be an udfa but I wouldn't mind using our last pick on him just to make sure we get him.

I’ve seen him play a few times and never felt he was lazy. He showed a good motor, quickness and strength. He seemed better at anchoring than collapsing the pocket. Not a sack guy as he lacks that last second burst. Height is not always an advantage. He tends to lay too upright, which limits his leverage. This allows him to be handled by smaller players. I’d definitely say second round. So much in this draft depends on rather there’s a run or two on DLs.

Russ Smith is the guy to ask. He really likes him. Here’s what I wrote previously, “I appreciate the admiration for Nash. He reminds me of Boldin. He was a QB, converted to WR. He has great instincts and is intensely competitive. He might end up like Kupp, but it will take time for him to get there. That’s a big projection to make. Sadly he lacks speed. He may go as high as round 2 if someone really needs that type of receiver. At this time he’s like Wilson, but has far more potential. I just don’t see the Cards taking another mid-distance receiver further crowding that area. They need speed. Nash would be an asset, but the timing is bad.”

Agree. If you can clean up his weight and and his play leverage, he could be very good.

I haven't watched him play yet but what I saw had him listed as a deep threat with speed. That's why I was interested. But reading the defense well can help a guybget deep too ... but we kinda need a twitchy guy
